One play can change a season

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Yep Drew lost that game for us. Must be that big contract he signed. How wonder how many more games we could have won this year if we had played Chase Daniel instead of some over paid, me first, Brett ...

This was the first game that I accused Brees of being over paid.

The throw before that was also dangerous. Devrey was covered pretty good but the throw was on target. I think Brees felt he was on his game and took another risky throw trying to force a 2 TD lead before the half.

I will say this, before that throw I was hoping we'd play it safe...go into the half with the lead and put the weight on our defense to hold. I think they would have stepped up to the challenge. I felt going into the half tied, it felt like they had the lead even though they didn't.

That pick took a deflated kaperlick after his pick and made him fearless. He knew after that his defense had his back.
He was dejected leaving the field after P-Rob picked him but he was all smiles after Drew threw the pick 6. Big swing in momentum.

I don't think ANYONE is saying that. Without Brees, this is a 2-9 team (or worse) and the only race they would be in is the one for the #1 overall draft pick.

My point was that after 5 losses (and some wins) where the defense was an AWFUL, PATHETIC MESS that cost us games (or almost did), that was not the case yesterday.

99 out of a 100 times we can't afford for Brees to be anything less than perfect to have a chance to win due to the defense. Yesterday may have been that one time where he could have played it "safe(r)" and the defense helped get the win.

I would love to visit an alternate universe where we called a couple of Ivory runs or a pass into the end zone at least (less likely to be a pick 6) and that game goes to the half at Saints 14-7.

Something tells me that we win that game 28-21...

I don't know if Brees even saw the field clearly from behind his linemen on that Brooks pick 6, because Brooks didn't really move at all during that play and Brees still drew the ball directly at him?!

But, it is what it is, the officiating certainly didn't do the Saints any favors either.

But today I believe that I saw the season-changer that will keep us out of the playoffs.

Consider this:

With less than 1 minute left in the 1st half, the ball, and a 14-7 lead, Drew Brees more than likely threw the Saints season away with the Brooks pick 6.

Until that point the Saints had the lead, the momentum, and ALL of the teams that were ahead of them for the #6 seed had LOST.

We had control of our destiny in our hands and threw it away to the worst of all enemies - the team that tortured Saints fans for decades and ended our season last year.

Maybe by Wednesday I can find my black and gold framed, rose tinted sunglasses, but today's loss ends any chance we have of making the playoffs in my mind...
i still think of 2 nfc teams in 2010 at 7 and 8 going to the last game to win a div. i still have a little bitty hope that others keep losing.

Re: One play can change a season

If we must have a goat for this game, it would be the Offensive Line. I have
been critical of Drew this season, which is legal in both Texas and Louisiana. But he had about 1.3 seconds to release Sunday, and that still
involved getting knocked backwards. Our offensive line, even Bushrod, got punked. Nobody could have made good decisions, nor good throws yesterday under that pressure.

Brees is the best quarterback alive. He is not the singular reason we're losing. He is great enough to keep us in all the games, most we wouldnt have even been in, with our horrible defensive start. But if he played up to his complete potential this season, I dont know, maybe??? show up for practice this summer????, yeah, we win 3 of those losses, probably 4. He's still a good guy. But I think he f***ed up. My sister messes up. I still root for her, and if she had a jersey, I would still wear it.

Re: One play can change a season

I love Brees to death but sometimes he just makes poor decisions. The problem is he and Carmichael don't know how to take what is given to them. How did we beat the colts in the Superbowl? We ate them up with the short passes, taking what was given to us. Brees and Carmichael are always looking for the 30 yard bomb instead of the 5 yard slant and let the receiver get the rest. Did you see the 4th and 29 conversion by the Ravens? A 2 yard pass to Rice and he ran for 29 yards for the conversion. We need to let our receivers make the big gainers in YAC not always throwing it 30 yards in the air.
