Sarcastaball becoming a reality?

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; The competetion committee still has to vote on it, he can propose change all he wants. This can't happen without a vote, plain and simple. I herd this morning this may pave the way for adding 2 more regular season ...

I herd this morning this may pave the way for adding 2 more regular season games due to being able to eliminate players on special teams and add depth to the offense and defensive side of the ball.
This is an attempt to make more revenue for the owners and NFL not player safety IMO, don't forget Roger is there to protect the owners not the players or the fans.

Schiano get an A for thinking outside the box.

The NFL is terrified of lawsuits and we all should be just as scared. Lawsuits will be the bullet that destroys the NFL as we know it, hell its already starting.

If the option is litigation destroying my NFL versus a few silly rule changes in order to keep it similar to the game we currently love I'm OK with it.

Yes Goodell is a villain, but this idea isn't as bad as I originally thought considering the intent and possible consequences of ignoring the oncoming wave of costly lawsuits.

He has to give the appearance that the NFL is "concerned" with the safety of the player. This is in advance of all the upcoming lawsuits. A smoke screen is all it is. Dress all the players in those "Sumo" suits and let them play!!! That would be fun to watch and no one gets hurt!!! I knew I'd kept my Tudor Electric Football game for a reason!!!

Roger was tasked to extend the regular season from day one. He made a big push early on and failed. HE FAILED. In fact, he has failed at everything. . If I were an owner I would be livid with him. He has brought more negative PR to the NFL in one year than all the other commissioners combined.

And it's not the owners, it's him! It's him because he does exactly what the owners tell him to do instead of telling them what they need to hear. There are other options to create more revenue besides games. Make the bye week a fan day at the home stadiium, a pep ralley of sorts, a real event with paying customers meeting and greeting their team. Make the pro bowl a skills based event that last two days with videos of the players mixed in. Almost 0 threat of injuries, you make additional revenue, and the fans get more involved.

You know what? Our football players would be able to play longer if they played soccer. Godhell may be onto something here.

I wouldn't be surprised if he replaced kickoffs with no-contact games of jack pot.

I think we need to do away with Goodell instead of kickoffs.

Re: Sarcastaball becoming a reality?

I think a much easier solution would be to just get rid of the extra point! You score a TD you have a choice to take 7pts or go for 2pt conversion and get 8. Jason Cole had an excellent article on this subject.

Re: Sarcastaball becoming a reality?

Treated realistically, this scenario would even further arena-ize the game ,changing it in ridiculous ways that I don't think these people have thought through.

The rule would be encouraging good offenses with fast paced, high powered passing attacks to GO FOR IT every time, or more often than they do an onside kick....leading to more scores going the other way when they fail; thus encouraging quicker scoring, more "bombs-away" down-the-field playing and more passing, more teams playing from behind for more of the game.

The ideal team under this rule, would be a passing team with an elite QB like the Patriots/Saints/Broncos, that is able to come back from a two-TD lead or score TD's quickly....you could go for it early in the game, when up by 7 points against a weak defense, and you get it, score, and you put the nail in the coffin -- up by 14, the game is now essentially "garbage football" in the 2nd quarter. I'm not sure that's a three-hour game that people want to see. Bad teams would become worse and elite teams and QBs would pull away from the pack and dominate the sport, affecting parity.

Ray Rice's 4th and 29 showed how possible it is....the problem with this scenario is that the more arena-like the game becomes, the worse it gets that way, it creates a death spiral...eventually it will be like basketball, with no defense at all, and scores like 77-70 and 103-65 will be commonplace.

It would also eventually change the punter position, from thin fragile guys to more robust, QB type players with more of an arm and/or able to run, so teams *could* fake it once in a while without changing personell. If I had a good defense I'd draft a college QB and teach him to punt, trade off some yards he is able to kick downfield for the ability to line up and run the fake at will...now the rules about substituting quarterbacks will need to be changed, rules about roughing the kicker or roughing the passer will be affected, these 4th and 15s will often be decided by various dubious penalties and officiating, especially cheap pass interference calls, was the ball catchable, was it tipped, etc.

Because if one team is up by 7 and goes for it early in the game and gets it, then scores, they go up by 14, forcing the other team to start going for it. Which leads to more short fields and faster scoring...the game we know will turn into a monster we can barely recognize....
