Report: Saints owner will sue the NFL if Sean Payton signs with the Cowboys

According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson plans on suing the NFL for millions of dollars if head coach Sean Payton is allowed to leave and sign with the Cowboys.

Ed Werder @Edwerderespn Very good source tells me that Saints owner Tom Benson would sue league for millions if Sean Payton allowed to leave for Dallas or elsewhere

Payton signed a new contract last season with the Saints, but the NFL voided it because of language in the contract that they weren’t happy with.

I’m not sure how Benson can sue the league and win when the NFL has the right to void any contracts they want.

Exactly. What's the point of a contract if they can pick and choose which ones they want to follow. That's not how it works.

I think this has more to do with him being able to be a FA even though he was suspended, without pay for the 2012 season. I think Benson wants SP's last year of the original contract, not the extension that was voided, tolled to 2013. Which I think is only fair. I think any other owner would try to do the same.

Benson did his homework. It took a while for this to develop which says he and team Benson think they have a strong case.

Go Benson!!!!!
Good for him!!!
All of the bounty stuff, well, I know he is a good business man and I guess his hands were tied and he sort to or had to let it work itself out.
He seemed so silent.

As some you have said, it seems , perhaps breaking this mans's team, Benson that is, was a goal here.

Good for Benson !!!!!!:bng:

Something is fishy that it took that long for the league to reject it in the first place.

The NFL is really trying to strong arm the little ole southern city. Could any one believe that they would ever have brought this bounty crap on the giants or the jets of NEW YORK CITY. Bullchit

Sports contracts mean jack nowadays.

How many times have we seen players hold out for a new contract midway through the contract their current contract?

This is about Dallas, Atlanta, New York, Chicago, and soon Los Angeles...

Big Market Football...

Jerry wants what Jerry wants and the insane, unchecked greed is why we should follow things with a closer, objective eye...

I do not think we are going to lose Payton, especially to the Cowgirls. However, if Payton surprises and signs with Dallas or anyone else, then sue anyone you can as well as their relatives and small pets. I am not sure exactly what you would go after them for, but Benson is rich with a good legal team, they can figure something out.

This whole thing was not an issue until it became apparent that the Cowboys were not going to win their division, that they were going to be 8-8, then the story mysteriously popped up all over the place.... I would not be surprised if Jerry Jones was whispering in Roger Goodell's ear, "I had my lawyer take another look at that Sean Payton contract, and I think there's something you ought to see here." Or even whispering in Jason Garrett's ear, turning up the heat on him....

But until we hear something substantial other than rumor, to me it's a variation on what Sean Payton said about his assistant coaches being interviewed for head coaching jobs. I like it when the phone is ringing, it means you are doing something right.

Best case scenario even though it goes against good vs. evil "root for the Cowboys" They win and they keep Garrett then we win we keep SP.

What took him so damn long to comment, this statement should have been made the same Sunday Glazer announced the contract being voided

Re: Report: Saints owner will sue the NFL if Sean Payton signs with the Cowboys

If he wants to leave fine. Don't want him if he doesn't want to be here and I'm sure the feeling is mutual with Benson. However, rules are freakin rules. This is not Vietnam as Goodman stated. If the NLF broke rules then Benson should be compensated accordingly. This is a growing concern with the NFL. They follow the rules that benefit them. If you have a problem with it then they freakin dare you to challenge them. They will fight you to the death. I just hope we can establish who will be head coach next season right now. Sickening fans have to go through this mess.

Ok I've been moving this past week.... every night too.
My internet is finally back up but unless I MISSED something nothing has changed. Last I saw he was close to complete a long term deal with the Saints. This is the only place I've seen talk about him going to Dallas.

Have I missed something?

Do like the Jets and the Raiders. Trade Payton to Dallas for all of their draft choices and their linebackers. Be proactive in this. If he wants to go "home" let's get something for him.

Re: Report: Saints owner will sue the NFL if Sean Payton signs with the Cowboys

First of all, why in hell would SP WANT to coach Dallas? Second, what the hell happened to make him want to leave? Third, if SP leaves, my opinion of him would be that he's a POS and better not come back to LA and after all this BS, I'm done with the NFL and football all together. That will be the straw that breaks my back with the NFL. However, if that does happen I hope Benson hires either John Fox or Gruden because SP can't beat those two consistently.

Oh, and we should leak that he was in contact with the team during his suspension so he can't be reinstated.

who is reporting that he wants to leave? Again my internet is back up and I didn't see anything new that he's considering this.

Is this the we'll lose Drew Brees sky is falling **** again?

Benson could possibly bring an action for tortious interfence with the contractual relations of others. If Benson thinks he can survive a motion for summary judgment, then it would be worth it. Just because the NFL says it can void contracts or reserves the right to do it, doesn't mean that will be enforced.
