RG messing with a good thing yet again .... wants to expand playoffs

If you like (or don't like) Roger Goodell's ambition to increase the regular-season schedule to 18 games, you're really going to love (or hate) the owners' next big idea -- playoff expansion.

That's what Goodell discussed Wednesday with the media at the owners' meetings in Dallas.

"Right now we're with 12 teams obviously. We'll look at probably 14 or 16 teams," Goodell said, via NFL.com.

So, um, half the league would make the postseason, then? Yeah, that sounds like kind of a brutal idea, right?

Apparently the owners have discussed it before, but didn't implement anything. That inability to move the idea forward could very well happen again once the competition committee discusses it (we assume) in the spring.

But although some might believe an expanded postseason would water down the playoff teams, it also might be tough to convince the owners of perennially mediocre teams (cough, cough, San Diego) that their squads would have a chance to earn additional money by making more franchises eligible for the playoffs.

Isn't that right, Philip Rivers?

Terrible idea. It would be watered down and too long like the NBA playoffs :(

Allowing 1/2 of any league to make championship playoffs is sports wellfare.

As a player I would hate the idea. Sure its nice to make the playoffs but you want it to mean something more than that you got a 8-8 record.

There is an idea... Bowl games for the pros?

Bring back the "Runner Up" bowl to replace the Pro Bowl. There was such a thing at one time.

Another example that he doesn't care about the players. And it would make getting to the playoffs very anti climactic. Does he watch other sports? The NBA and NHL get blasted all the time for having half, or more than half of their league in the playoffs.

Everything is perfectly set as far as size of the league, number of divisions per conference, number of games, number of playoff teams, playoff format etc. RG can't make it better, only different which in this case would make it worse. I know the owners want more profit and revenue, hell who wouldn't? But 18 game regular season schedules and a slew of Thursday night games isn't the answer. I don't know what the right answer is and apparently neither does anybody else. Hopefully someone can figure out a good way to fatten up the ponderous cash cow known as the NFL without killing it in the process.

Thursday Night Football, 18 game schedule, increase the number of teams in the playoffs ... it's quantity-over-quality and it's getting tiresome. There's a reason I don't pay much attention to the first few rounds of the NBA playoffs, NCAA tournament, MLB/NHL playoffs and college bowl games ... they're too saturated.

Cramming more games down my throat is not going to make me want more, it makes me want to regurgitate.

I did not know that. I was around back then, but under the age of ten, so I'm correct in assuming that while my Dad sat me down & made me watch football with him, I wasn't necessarily that interested until after the age of 8-10yrs.

Great idea, as opposed to playing the ProBowl. At least the game could have some meaning. Doesn't seem like the players/coaches had much interest in it, but Lombardi (as great as he was) tended to be a bit of an S.O.B. all the time anyway, ... come on, we all know it, I'm just sayin' what everybody's thinking,.

Re: RG messing with a good thing yet again .... wants to expand playoffs

They have been needing a playoff expansion for years.

I think the teams went from 28 to 32 in the span of about 20 years where the number of seeds stayed the same, what really IMO screwed up the playoff structure in the last 12 years is when they did the division realignment which went from 3 divisions to 4.

Anyone remember when 8-8 and 9-7 almost guaranteed you get in the playoffs?

Those days have become an after thought to where that Guarantee is now set at 10 wins. Only exception being is terrible divisions like the recent NFC East or NFC West where 7-9 wins teams get in, but it was for winning the division, but perhaps switching over to 4 division conferences is what has allowed Division winners to get in at 7,8, and sometimes 9 wins.

I dont like Roger Goodell, but I have been throwing this idea out there for a while and I think it needs to happen to where we see a playoff expansion consisting of 14-16 compared to the traditional 12.

Seeing recently 2 teams finish 9-7 and go to the SB (with 1 of them winning it) kind of supports the idea that something needs to change.

Another one of the reasons it does need to change is the fact compared to 15+ years ago, more and more teams are getting better, most times you could write a check in the box on some teams that come up on the schedule (Speaking back before Salary Cap era), today, its anyones game.

Of course this would mean the falcons get in if they go 9-7 next year.
