It could certainly creat a dilemma after years of great players.

The banners in the south end zone corner should take the place of retiring the actual number on the uniform.

It's not hero worship - it's the holding up an example of "This is How It's Done"...

And we haven't had too many in this league or country for that matter who do it...

But when you look at what Archie did and gave up for his community, you retire that number and you set an example to current players that this is the bar, the standard with which we measure greatness for New Orleans Saints...

You hang a banner from the rafters with the name and number and years he played on it, and it says the same exact thing, This Is How It's Done. It's actually better recognition for the player because people SEE it, it's a permanent visual reminder, every game, instead of them sitting there watching the games and not really noticing or thinking about it, that there isn't a particular number ever on the field. I mean, I don't sit around thinking about #17 as being Billy Kilmer, it's Meachem. Or was. I don't care who else had it and what they did. And then it will belong to someone else eventually, after that.

I mean a banner, or the thing like some teams do with the names around the edge of the stadium, if you're that player you can go the games as an old man and freaking point at it, show it to your kids and say, "that was me," and feel pride, it really means something, the NAME lives on, the man lives on. A retired number is only good for, people who already know it's retired, which in these days is just a handful of misty-eyed nostalgic fans who are the only ones who give a crap about it.

The BANNER is the way to go with this. Trust me.

I don't recall Colby Bockwoldt being that good. Certainly not good enough to consider retiring his number.

If my memory is correct, aren't there banners for Eddie Robinson, Pistol Pete, Archie and Rickey hanging near the championship banners in the dome?

Re: #57

Yes there are. hanging right over my head.

Re: #57

Problem solved, just keep making those and hang them up in the dome

Maybe he wanted to wear that number because of the history behind it and the men that have carried it before him?! Who knows, maybe Jackson was/is Hawthorne's idol, and wearing "his" number could be him paying homage to him?!

Anyway, I don't think retiring numbers is something that should be done in the NFL, since you can run out of numbers fairly quickly if you do that with any type of regularity. It works for hockey, but not for a sport with 53 men teams.
