Should the New Orleans Saints sign Chad Jones?
 

Chad Jones' comeback from a horrific injury took an interesting turn Thursday when news broke that he might try out for the New Orleans Saints. Discussions between his agent, Rocky Arceneaux, and team officials were expected to begin now that Jones has received medical clearance to resume full-speed and contact work.

Former LSU football player Chad Jones would probably need to switch from safety to linebacker to make the team.
Before his injury, Jones was considered a top safety prospect. He was selected in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. However, injuries to his ankle and leg have robbed him of some of his speed, burst and agility. Consequently, some NFL scouts think his best chance to return to the NFL will be at linebacker.

I don't think they should sign him just to be signing him. It looks as though his times are pretty slow for a DB. But if his times have gotten faster and he can actually help the team then I'd be for it. We aren't desperate enough to sign someone just for the sake of signing them.

I think it's more of a case of seeing if he has enough in him to try out in preseason for the 2013 season.

If he looks 100% healthy, why not?
If he still runs a 4.9, probably not.

You never know.

Of course he has to make the grade physically. But the guy may have the know-how and we have seen already that is something the Saints are a bit lacking with.

If he can play, even help out on special teams do it. Having someone on the team that dug themselves out of a hopeless situation inspires others on and off the field.

If he can play, why not?

As long as the effort to develop him does not take away from better options we would have on defense, then why not move forward?

We don't need another sack specialist safety, nor an undersized linebacker he can't play bigger than his size...

If he can play by all means but don't sign him just because he's from LSU.

Yeah, LBs run 4.9 and better in the pros, but that simply isnt his natural position. Taking on TEs and and jamming WRs is a totally different animal than taking on absolutely hulking OLs that you're built for and pre-programmed to deal with. I think he'd be a long term prospect at best. I honestly hope I'm wrong.

Look at it this way: Ill bet fully half of fully healthy #1 picks don't really pan out, so Id venture to guess that this young man will have a long road ahead.

When? We cant sign him this season without dropping someone from the roster. He hasn't been in a camp since 2010 and he hasn't demonstrated competence to play. The Saints aren't going to make a roster move until February, so I'm somewhat confused by the purpose of speculating about offering a contract.

At least take a look at him in camp, anyone who come back like he has proved something to me, can't hurt. I wish him well!!
