Question about the salary cap?

Ok I know this might seem like a dumb question but I wanted someone who knows about the cap to answer this.

So I some what think I know how Loomis was able to negotiate Drews contract by using a "signing bonus" to be able to give him what he wanted and also it did not affect the cap.

If that is correct, my question is why can we not use that same loop hole to negotiate other players contracts for next year to help our cap issues?

That is a great question! There are some subtle differences that I don't understand like bonus money not counting toward the salary cap. I am looking forward to the answer.

Any takers, I guess my question is do signing bonuses go toward the cap?

If I am not mistaken, no. Only guaranteed money. Thats why they restructured the players they did this year. Gave them some of there previous contract salary up front as a bonus, the rest goes as salary which comes off the cap.

What about incentive bonuses? How far can you back load a contract and how much of that money is guaranteed?

Thats exactly what they are going to want to do. But the player has to agree to it.

If your right Mike, and I believe you are, then why wouldn't all teams just pay players in bonus money. I mean if you think about it, you could pay every player league minimum and say, don't worry we will pay you butt loads in bonuses.

It kind of defeats the whole purpose of a salary cap in the first place.

"Incentive bonuses require a team to pay a player additional money if he achieves a certain goal. For the purposes of the salary cap, bonuses are classified as either "likely to be earned", which requires the amount of the bonus to count against the team's salary cap, or "not likely to be earned", which is not counted. A team's salary cap is adjusted downward for NLTBE bonuses that were earned in the previous year but not counted against that year's cap. It is adjusted upward for LTBE bonuses that were not earned in the previous year but were counted against that year's cap." - Wikipedia

I think I'm more confused now than I was before I read that.
