NEW ORLEANS — Throughout the week, the Saints declared their desire to reach .500 by season’s end as reason enough to play finale with fire.

So much for desire.

The Saints allowed 28 unanswered second-half points to Carolina on Sunday and fell for the ninth time in 2012, losing to the Panthers 44-38.
The game was everything about New Orleans’ (7-9) season packed into one 60-minute ride.

New Orleans trailed early, roared back past the Panthers (7-9) and then petered out, allowing Carolina to take a double digit lead from which the Saints almost dug their way out.

In truth, there wasn’t much to play for with no possibility for playoffs for either club.

The game amounted to a push for personal achievement more than anything.

Re: Saints come up short against Panthers, 44-38

The Saints have been talking **** all year long, hence my comments that TALK IS CHEAP. I know we're all disappointed but I'm most disappointed in this coaching staff and these players. For all the talk about wanting to take things out on our opponents this year, our team played like lambs. All season long I never saw any fire, any anger or the will to impose their will on any other team. What I saw was a timid team looking for excuses. A coaching staff without any innovation or creativity. When our military goes into battle all sorts of things can and do happen. Leaders are lost, plans have to change to meet a changing environment etc. If you let those things dissuade you, you will lose and that's what we saw from this team this year. I'm not throwing Spaggs under the bus, nor do I want to see him go next year, but I've been saying for years now that we needed more talent on defense. That we needed to address our D-Line, our LB's, our Safeties. I thought we were ok with our CB's until we lost Porter and have had to suffer through Patrick Robinson et al. Now, finally others are seeing what I've been saying about PR. This year, we need to let go of the fan favorites in order to get better. We need to make the necessary changes to get back into the fray and I'm afraid that will mean losing players like a Will Smith, Sedrick Ellis, Roman Harper, Jermon Bushrod, Devery Henderson, Scott Shanle, Patrick Robinson and maybe even Johnny Patrick. None of these players have shown the ability to be anything special and WE NEED PLAYMAKERS! If you're not a PLAYMAKER then you need to be replaced. Time waits for no one and if we want to win another championship in the near future, we must make the moves necessary to do so.

great post, MM.
This makes up for your comments about throwing the game for "draft position."

It's easy to say that we need to cut all these guys but the odds are you're going to replace them with some one just as bad or worse. Especially Bushrod. Bushrod is a good LT. Not All-Pro but he definitely isn't part of the problem.

No they never quit.

Although they were going into some games with flawed game plans, that is for sure.
