The New Orleans Saints Must Address Their Needs With Their 2013 NFL Draft First Round Pick

The New Orleans Saints will have the 15th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and there is one area of concern that the team needs to address, the secondary. The Saints had the worst defense in the NFL this past season and statistically the worst in NFL history. Furthermore, the defense gave up a league high 2,280 yards after the catch and all of that falls on the secondary. Sure, the coaching staff is partly to blame too, but these are professional NFL players we’re talking about and they should be able to make a tackle.

With that said, the Saints really need to go after a cornerback or safety with their 15th pick and bring some life into the secondary. Cornerback Jabari Greer is not getting any younger and he could re-aggravate his sports hernia injury at any moment. Furthermore, the Saints could save some money by letting go of safety Roman Harper. Harper and Greer are getting older but they are experienced and both had decent seasons.

History has shown us that the Saints have had success drafting secondary players in the first round. The last time the Saints picked 15th or higher they selected free safety Malcolm Jenkins with the 14th overall pick back in 2009, the Saints’ Super Bowl season. Since coming to the Saints, Jenkins has been one of the better players in the secondary and was even named team captain for this past season.

Come April 25th, 2013 the Saints need to select either a cornerback or safety to help their weak secondary. There will be plenty of talent available but at this point I would like to see the Saints try to go after Alabama CB DeMarcus Milliner or Mississippi State CB Johnthan Banks. Both players could help the Saints’ secondary immediately and hopefully one of the two will fall to the Saints.

Drafting for need huh? Thats a recipe for continued failure.

Exactly. Always go BPA, that seems to always work in the long run.

I can buy that there are certain position where BPA may not be a good idea, unless the BPA is light years ahead of everyone else.

If there's a QB ranked slightly ahead of a stud DE at pick 15, I'm going with the stud DE.

Ditto at RB. We may have a RB graded 95 out of 100, and a LB graded 92, I'm going LB.

Oh, really?!

So, the OLBs missing tackles and not getting out of blocks on screens and other short yardage passes had nothing to do with the yardage gained after the catch?!

I guess he's right... it was all on the secondary. :whatever:

"The New Orleans Saints Must Address Their Needs".... Who would've thought. And here I was thinking the Saints were hosting a keg party and watching the draft this year.

YEAH YEAH YEAH

Alejandro Aviles will be one of the writers over hyping players up the board

BPA

But here i have to agree with him on these two

"Saints try to go after Alabama CB DeMarcus Milliner or Mississippi State CB Johnthan Banks. Both players could help the Saints’ secondary immediately and hopefully one of the two will fall to the Saints."

I can live with the picks but both should be off the board unless they tank the combine and proday

Then you go get them.

The teams above us have more pressing issues.

As things stand now I'd rather drop back 5/7 spots and look at Rhodes/Trufant Poyer and pick up a later first rounder like Montgomery,Mingo,Jordan,Okafor

just get ahead of tampa and one of them will be yours.

I always liked the trading game were you get more picks than when you started

I think Xavier Rhodes is the best corner in this draft. Ive seen alot of Florida State games and he can flat out cover. Trade back and get a 2nd rounder. Draft Xavier Rhodes in the 1st, Arthur Brown in the 2nd and Dominique Easley DT Florida in the 3rd.

Yep, our secondary is the problem.:dunce:
Spags system is built on getting pressure with the front four. So we should not make an effort to build according to the system?
Have you even studied the Saints? Opposing QB's have time to enjoy a clean pocket and wait for their receiver to open up.
Hell, our secondary sucks too, but we have to get a D-line player.

Edit:Seriously??? Malcolm Jenkins has been a valuable first round draft choice? Step away from the crack pipe!

Agreed, there is no pressure up front, I don't think we have horrible corners..... I think we have horrible corners because there's no pressure!!!!! You could eat a whole dunkin doughnut, and drink a latte with the time some of these qbs were getting back there. I think two out of these six picks should be DE's

Even though its true that we need to put pressure on QB for our corners to play better, what about when it's a quick pass and it turns into a 20 yard gain because our DB's are shocking
You can't ask the D line to get pressure on a quick pass, it's our DB's fault for not getting a jam on the WR's and then shoddy tackling after the catch
I think the first two picks should be D line and OLB but we definitley need a ball hawk at corner, Greer is not young anymore and won't be around forever and Robinson for the lack of a better word....sucks

Rhodes has some nice size at 6-1 and 217, so he would match up better against some of the bigger receivers like Vincent Jackson and Julio Jones.

Quote:

Xavier Rhodes, CB

Strengths: Imposing size for the cornerback position and a willing hitter, truly enjoying the physical aspect of playing on defense. He is aggressive at the line of scrimmage and works hard to knock receivers off their route while still showing the quickness and footwork to quickly redirect and run with receivers downfield. His length and aggressive nature will make for a good matchup against bigger receivers at the next level.

Weaknesses: Still a little rough around the edges and tends to get too physical in man coverage.
