They teach you in Lifeguard classes that drowning victims will drag you down in a panic...

He was efficient enough in the things he was asked to do, and he was easily an upgrade to anything they've had since Matt Hasselbeck, in his prime. But that is a pound it out offense, and Marshawn Lynch had a really, really good year. I had no idea Lynch was capable of that kind of season, after all his previous under achievements.

I don't see Wilson being able to carry an offense without a complimentary running game, and the truly elite QB's have to be able to do that. People like cowturd are really overreacting to the fact that these rookie QB's were able to get into the playoffs. It is a team game however. These guys have a long way to go, to be elite.

Wilson is definitely a top 10 QB already. You say that Wilson did what was asked, but that was not much because they had Marshawn Lynch running the ball. Then you say that Lynch had a better year than you expected. Did you ever consider that Lynch had a better year because of the play of Wilson?

Early in the season, the Seahawks thought they could win games if the QB did not make plays that hurt the team. They believed that their running game and their defense were sufficient to put them into the playoffs. So, when you say that Wilson was not asked to do much, you are correct WRT the first half of the season. But how well was that working? The Seahawks were 97 yards away from going 6-6 on the season facing the Bears at Soldier Field with 3:40 left on the clock. At that point, Pete Carroll had an epiphany. If the Seahawks were going to win the game, they had to let Wilson drive the team downfield. That is just what he did. He got the Hawks a 3 point lead with about 30 seconds left in the game. And then the Hawks D gave up a 57 yard pass that set up a game tying field goal. (Sound familiar?) In OT, Wilson drove the Hawks downfield again for the winning TD.

It was that game that gave the Seahawks the confidence to let Wilson lead the team. From that point on, he has been the best QB in the NFL. That is not saying that he is a better QB than Peyton, Aaron, Tom, or Drew. But at the end of the season, no one was playing better than Wilson. And when the Hawks running game failed them in the NFC divisional round, Wilson put the team on his back and gave the team the lead with 30 seconds to go in the game. That was with Marshawn Lynch unable to run the ball (46 yards in 16 carries). Wilson ended up with almost as many yards carrying the ball in 7 attempts (60 yards) as his running backs were able to produce (64 yards in 20 attempts). Wilson produced 445 out of the Seahawks 491 total yards. If that does not show that Wilson carried the team when they had no run game, I don't know what does.

There wasn't much film on him this year so we will see what he does next year after defenses get to look at this year's film. You do have to give him credit though, it's not like he has great receivers.

You've got a good point. The thing is, Wilson is always the most prepared player on the field. Other teams will make adjustments, but Wilson will figure out what their adjustments are and change things up on the opposing defense. He already shows that he can do that within a game, not just within a season.

I guess the 500 lb gorilla in the room speculation question is...

Would you rather have Brees for 5 more seasons or Russell Wilson for the next 10?

Thats a close one.

Love having Drew, but his contract...

...is going to be like a sailor's one night of fun in a Far East Pleasure House coming with a bad case of the Salary Clap...

If you gave me Brees with Seattle's defense, how many championships would the Saints win in the next 5 years?

If you gave me Wilson with Seattle's defense, how many championships would the Seahawks win in the next 10 years?

Now I'm a Wilson fan myself(I absolutely love the guy)... but let's get real here. It's been 1 year.

Wilsonfan - You have every reason to be optimistic about Wilson... hell most people should. The guy is modest, talented, a hard worker, and plays the game the right way. I've watched the guy closely since NC State... there's nothing not to like about him. But to jump the gun and say he's already the best quarterback the Seahawks has ever had and if you're saying he's already one of the elite quarterbacks in the league, after ONE YEAR, just shows that you're not being objective and just being a bias homer.

On Cowherd’s afternoon radio show on ESPN ‘The Herd’ he spent a lot of time heaping praise on rookie QB Russell Wilson. And to his credit, Wilson deserves that praise, despite the loss, but he’s had a remarkable season. Cowherd decided to one up all others by flat out proclaiming that Russell Wilson has now elevated himself to a top 5 Quarterback in the NFL, even better in some regards than Drew Brees.

I don’t know why I have to wait to say that I think the guy is a top 5-6 Quarterback in the League…He’s Drew Brees, with a better arm and better feet.

ESPN

You have to wait because Russell was a product of his coaches gimmick offensive scheme. The run option. SF uses that as well and that dog won't hunt next year, bet on it. Why the nfl takes so long defensively to adjust to these gimmick offenses is beyond me, but it is what it is and everyone will have adjusted to it by next season. Schemes like what Sean Payton uses are more likely to stand the test of time. The teams that run that scheme like Wash., Seattle, and SF will have a hard time repeating this years success next season. When we played those teams, our offense made the plays to beat those teams and if it weren't for our pathetic defensive talent and schemes we would have won those games.
