MOBILE, Ala. — Monday was a bittersweet day for members of the New Orleans Saints’ coaching staff — as well as 29 other NFL staffs.

While they would rather have been preparing for Super Bowl XLVII, like the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers, coaches and scouts from 30 teams — including the Saints — were trying to find the players they hope will help take them where they wanted to be.

“I don’t want to be here. … I would rather be where we should be — in the playoffs — right now,” Saints interim coach Joe Vitt said Monday as workouts for the 64th annual Senior Bowl began. “You don’t want to be here.

“Why we’re here means we’re not good enough to be in the playoffs, and we’ve got to get better personnel. We’ve got to make sure we grade these guys properly and evaluate them properly — and we will.”

“It depends on the guy,” Spagnuolo said when asked whether the Saints can get a player at No. 15 who will quickly make a difference. “We’ve seen around the league where guys have done that. ... But sometimes you’ve got to be a little bit patient.”

Lets get one of those guys

That's easier said than done is what he is saying.

How many drafted rookies made an impact on a defense like we need this season?

Historically, we do better with later picks. And we have been tortured by low round defensive picks. We tend to pick guys who are all helmet and no freaking concept of coordinated play.

A lot of times linebackers seems to be able to step right in and produce huge numbers like the guy Carolina got for example, all that Luke Kuechly kid did as a rookie was to post 164 tackles, 1 sac, 8 defended passes and INT. We need one of those!

I'm really hoping we get a player for one position.I don't want one of these tweeners(DE/OLB). I want either a very good OLB or DE.Not a player that's going to be too slow at LB but not big enough to shed blocks on the outside.

I like to see a larger more agressive pair of corners like Seattle...

It all starts up front. We have to get somebody who can rush the passer.
