Saints to a 3-4???

I live in the Philly are and was shocked when the local sports radio station 94.1 whip said that they are hearing the Saints are moving to a 3-4 and that Spagnuolo may be free for the Eagles.. I don't see us having the players for a 3-4. I want the Dome Patrol as much as we all do but I don't see that happening..

Pasaint..

New Orleans Saints Relieve DC Steve Spagnuolo and Secondary Coach Ken Flajole of Their Duties

Sean says we're going 3-4!

NT-Bunkley
LDE-Jordan
RDE-Hicks

OLB-Galette, Wilson, FA, Draft Pick

I think Lofton is a great candidate for ILB in a 3-4. Wilson can also play ILB.

Bye Bye Vilma and Smith.

Exciting times my friends, exciting times.

that was my first instinct.......although he failed to make Dallas into an elite D. With some pretty elite talent.

I like it. The personnel fits. However, I'd like to see Wilson outside rushing the passer full time.

Now I'm actually drooling that Mingo falls to us. He's perfect for that rush OLB spot.

OOOOHHHH great point. This changes the draft dynamic greatly doesn't it?

Also changes free-agent strategy as well. We'll need another NT, and a couple mid-level 3-4 DE's and LB's for depth and we're practically the Dome Patrol... right?:p.

Danno I don't know about Vilma leaving but he we have to take a pay cut. Damn I just remember that's the reason Vilma left the Jets because he couldn't handle the 3-4. So yes he maybe gone I would have like to see him and Lofton playing next to each other.

We saw them together this year. Vilma is now the square peg. He is in serious decline anyhow and I got the feeling coach is gonna get rid of all "Bounty" players. He wants to distance our team from that entire mess.

I'm in absolute shock about this news of Spags being fired and us switching to a 3-4. Well, I'm not as shocked about Spags being fired but switching to a 3-4 is a mindblowing change that I did NOT see coming. My God, the possibilities that we can speculate about now!

Glad I had some good info. I'm more a lurker than a poster. This move is very unexpected but very exciting. Something had to be done..right or wrong its a start.

Re: Saints to a 3-4???

We did that because Harper is more of a Linebacker with great coverage skills than he is a Saftey with great coverage skills , he plays like a LB too ...

Hawthorne and Lofton Inside , Vilma and Harper out I like it

Hell maybe even T'eo or a Jarvis Jones kinda guy

Even though he was injured all season....I wonder where this leaves Chris Chamberlain....he was Spags' guy.

There's absolutely no way Harper can be a successful 3-4 OLB, he simply doesn't have the size for that position!

So why is everyone assuming that Smith will be gone because of the switch. His strong point is against the run. Wouldn't that make him ideal for a 3-4 DE?

How can we go to a 3 - 4? We could barely field a 4 - 3!

I know this Could backfire big. But in the 4-3 if you break the first line of defense nobody else is there , which may be why payton decided he rather have a stronger second line of defense ... Everyones passing anyways

You couldn't really expect him to set the edge or have you been watching a different #41 play and try to shed blockers to make open field tackles on runners than I have?!

At the moment (before any acquisitions) the front 7 3-4 personnel would in all likelihood be:

Bunkley/Hicks as the NT
Jordan and Johnson as the DEs
Lofton and Hawthorne as the ILBs
Wilson and Galette as the OLBs

I think he is too small for the position and this late in his career I doubt he can take on double teams consistently in order to free up the OLB to rush the passer.

True, having two great tacklers who are used to making a lot of tackles during a season as the ILB pairing - Lofton & Hawthorne - will help cover any gap problems there might be with the NT.

Re: Saints to a 3-4???

this is some pretty exciting news. Lets not forget 2 things though guys...
1. Greg Romeus (6'5)
2. Braylon Broughton. (6'6)
I see these 2 being great fits for the 3-4 scheme. romeus did stand up at pitt as well as put his hand in the dirt and Braylon could be another stud.. Big, strong(6'6, 270+) DE that runs a blazin 40 for his size. Lets hope these guys can catch on and get coached up, im sure how Greg's injury progress has gone tho, we'll see.

On another note, with this change and the draft around the corner my sights are set on DION JORDAN, BARKEVIOUS MINGO, and MARGUS HUNT. Jordan is extremely quick and a pass rush specialist as well as Mingo, but the bug difference is jordan is actually quick enough to drop back into coverage and pick up the slot. Now another option that intrigues me a big deal is picking up Margus Hunt in the draft and pairing him up as the DE alongside cam Jordan and pluggin in Akiem Hicks as the NT. can u imagine hunt as a calibur of player as justin smith and jj watt? im very hyped over the "possibilities" the situation can bring..."if" everything pans out. lets hope for the best my fellow WhoDats!!! any thoughts??

Re: Saints to a 3-4???

It probably speaks volumes on what Payton thinks of Hicks as a NT , I played DT in a 3-4 and you have to be a mean sommummumma ...
