Cool Singletary : Saints

The Current 49'ers roster has 21 Starters from before their Harbaugh Era began , meaning they came from the Singletary era ...

This Man may not have had the Head Coaching Juice that so few do , but he damn sure made some real old school Tape and Knuckles type football players.

The Swag. The Strut. The Physical Animals. The Intensity , ha sounds like everything the Saints have been missing on defense and creeping onto the offensive side of the Ball as well.

If Romeo gets a another gig beyond New Orleans , my guy is Mike Singletary. Hands Down. Drew Brees has proved all he needs is a decent Defense and he'll get you a Lombardi. With Singletary barking down everyone's throat I doubt we'll miss any part of our current defense.

Sean Payton Turned to a 3-4 for several reasons.

1. He gets to keep Vilma

2. His Linebackers are the Strength of His Defense

3. The 3-4 Makes tons of sense in a Pass Happy league.

4. 3-4 Means there are more bodies around the Ball down field = Turnovers.

I think Crennel Is a Great Choice , but we could snag good old knock the snot out of you Singletary for cheaper.

The coaches salary is not a part of the cap, so that part really isn't an issue. Who gets the most out of what we have and will have is the only is issue that matters to me.... For me right now Crennel is the guy, I think in the end they may wind up hiring Mangini too. Those guys know that AFC division we are going head to head with this season. I think they give us the best chance to make this D successful.

Totally agree

Crennel is the guy we should get to run the D, he is a great coordinator and knows the 3-4 scheme and how to install it somewhere new

I wouldn't be against hiring mangini as our DB's coach, those guys could really help our team

Re: Singletary : Saints

1. Vilma has nothing to do with the Saints 3-4
Vilma has always been a strictly 4-3 kinda guy. He doesn't match well with a 3-4 scheme. In fact, when Eric Mangini took over the Jets in 2006 and brought with him a switch to the 3-4, Vilma's production suffered seriously over the next two years. So much so that in 2008 the Jets let him shop for a trade, one that brought him to New Orleans.

2. Aldon Smith was not a Singletary decision.

3. The 49ers Defense never broke the top 10 while he was in SF.
He is in Minnesota right now for the last two years doing what he did in SF and the Vikings Defense is raking the same as the 49ers did when he was there.

What does "cheaper" have to do with anything?

There is already a Mike Singletary thread.

I disagree, he has a very limited role in Minnesota when it comes to the actual implementation of the defense, and very little credit should be given to him personally for the way that defense bounced back this year - all numbers aside.

Not a big Singletary fan (as a coach).

I have my heart firmly entrenched on acquiring Romeo Crennel... or Todd Grantham.
