NEW ORLEANS — When New Orleans Saints safety Chris Reis emerged from a mass of humanity with a loose football in Super Bowl XLIV, it changed his life forever.

For Chris and Michael Reis, it turned out to be the “Recovery of a Lifetime,’’ a collaboration with author Mike Yorkey that depicts the inspirational journey of a Super Bowl hero son and his father’s battle against multiple addictions.

Chris Reis played a starring role in “Ambush,’’ the now famous recovered onside kick that helped spur the Saints to a 31-17 comeback victory against the Indianapolis Colts at Sun Life Stadium on Feb. 7, 2010.

On that moon-kissed night at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., it took 63 seconds for officials and players to peel off players from the dogpile and determine that Reis had out-wrestled a handful of Colts for the prized possession.

Reis said 18 teammates came off the Saints sideline to help uncover the pile.

That ball from “Ambush’’ is on display at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, symbolizing the earliest recovery of a onside kick in Super Bowl history.

To the Reises, it symbolizes much, much more.

I would still like to know where the ball ended up. The ball had come loose and gotten behind his knees when all the other players piled on. There is no way he possibly could have actually gotten the ball against his body from that position. Was it just that he had the most skin touching the ball or did he actually have solid possession of it?

Yeah i often thought that too

The more I watch the recovery the more I believe that;
Chris reis got the ball first but it slipped between his knees, one hand around it

But who comes in next?
Jonathan Casillas......he comes Flying in and looks like he notices Reis only had one hand on the ball underneath him
perhaps he and reis both held the ball at the same time

I kinda thought he had his bottom ( ass) over a good portion of the ball and his right hand and forearm over the other side.....

Does he still live in New Orleans? I keep thinking that I'll eventually run into him somewhere and give me the chance to ask him. My thinking is that he had the ball pinned against the backs of his knees with his hand and, while that doesn't constitute a solid possession, he probably had more of the ball than anyone else did. That's why it took so long to sort it all out.
