Ryan has never been a DC on a team with a winning record, and that bothers me. I do buy into the value of "knowing how to win"..... Which has little to do with football and more to do with not imploding you can taste victory. Winning is a culture.EG Atlanta Falcons

... and so is losing, which is why I agree that Ryan never having been a DC on a winning team should be a concern. Coaches like Ryan, IMO, subscribe to the "if you can't dazzle 'em with brilliance, baffle 'em with bullsh#t" philosophy and surround their programs with a lot of hype, drama, smoke, mirrors & theatrics in order to make it seem like their accomplishing something. Similiar to GW.

On the upside & from what I've seen, you can get away with that act when you DC for a team that has an offense like Brees & the Saints, so if Ryan is the choice, maybe it's only a two/three year plan.

Someone might finally explain to me what a Hokie is and why it's a good thing.
Cons- Kind of a spotty record with the pros. "He was fired on January 11, 2008 after the 2007 season with the Brown's defense ranking 25th against the pass, 27th against the run, and 30th in total-yards-against among 32 teams."

Ryan:
Pros- His un-miced cussing on the sidelines is legendary. It could maybe even get Bilick to actually talk about the game instead of babbling on about every other team in the league.
Cons- Some kid in some sweatshop'll be putting in some major extra hours sewing big ol' fleur de lis on big ol' shirts for maybe ten twelve cents an hour.

Draw- They were both DCs for Cleveland although Ryan was hired in after Grantham was fired and did a fairly decent job considering he had to deal with Holmgren, Mangina and the fact that the defense was on the field about eighty percent of the time due to some of the amazing decisions made by the two idiots mentioned above. I'm still in the we'll see camp although I really would like to finally find out what a freakin' hokie is.

You left out something on Grantham and Ryan.

Grantham Pro - @ Cowboys - Grantham served as the defensive line coach for the Dallas Cowboys until the end of the season when he joined the coaching staff at the University of Georgia as defensive coordinator. During Grantham's 2 seasons with Dallas, the Cowboys improved from 13th (2007) to 2nd (2009) in the league in points allowed.

@ Groegia - Grantham has installed a 3-4 defense. Despite breakdowns in coverage at times, the Bulldogs ranked 23rd nationally in total defense and 35th in scoring defense (22 points allowed per game). His defense also forced 26 takeaways, over twice as many as Georgia had in 2009 (12), and helped them move from 118th nationally in 2009 to 18th in 2010 in turnover margin.

@ Cleveland - Todd Grantham's first year as coordinator of the Browns defense was an eclectic mix of good and bad. They once again fielded one of the NFL's top pass defenses, actually stepping up in rank from 5th to 4th in the NFL. When starting cornerback Gary Baxter went down with a knee injury that ended his season, Leigh Bodden emerged as a solid playmaker. Overall, their secondary continued to play at a high level. They also ranked 11th in scoring defense despite possessing one of the leagues worst run defenses.

@ Indy - His D-Line was one of the catalysts of the biggest turnaround in league history (3-13 to 13-3),

Ryan Con - never been on a team with a winning record.

Out of Rob Ryans mouth:
"I inherited a team that was 31st in the league in defense and made them better," Ryan told ESPNDallas.com. "I (expletive) made them a hell of a lot better. I'll be out of work for like five minutes." <-- we just do not need any of that Rex type talk... As it turns out he has a long 5 minutes.

The worst part about this is the overwhelming majority of this forum thinks it is a bad idea...in my experience it is a bad idea

I am a little mixed on the situation.

Grantham though........hmmm

might not be such a bad choice, think honestly our FO is got the same problems we got in not knowing who is really fit for the position.

Personally i think Payton is messing with ESPN on the Ryan hire.
Can't believe he would hire Ryan after what happen with GW. They are cut from the same mold. I believe it's a total smoke screen to hire Grantham.
Peyton said himself during senior bowl week that the new DC may come from the college ranks. Could have been a hint or slip.

I think your right. I mean look Adam Schefter found out from his "sources". Local media found out from sources, you know the ones they talk to everyday because they live in N.O. that they were going to interview Grantham on Thursday and Ryan on Friday. Kristian Garic went on twitter and said Sean Payton told him personally that they were still interviewing. Sean Payton was on Mike & Mike this morning exactly 15min after Schefter and said he hasn't made a decision, still has about 3 or 4 interviews he's going to conduct because he has to get permission from some teams who have position coaches they want to interview and probably won't have a final one until middle to late next week.

All of these reporters, especially the ESPN guys, are always so quick to put stuff on twitter because they want to be first. True journalism has gone out the window since twitter came along. I'm not saying I don't like getting my info within seconds but at least make sure you have your FACTS straight before you post.

The whole KC payments has me worried though. He gets 3 mill per year to do nothing.

I did hear that if he hired on somewhere, he would get the difference between his salary and the 3 million.

If we paid him 1 mill, KC would have to fork over 2 mill.

Re: Saints plan to hire Ryan as DC

Romeo may be out of a DC job this season unless some desperate team takes him, reason why most may pass on him is due to the KC clause which may be a red flag to many teams that the end is nearing for him in football altogether, the clause basically is there saying "I dont have to work next season and make 3 mill". I dont think teams want that attitude.
