"Reports" say Rob Ryan will try to get Anthony Spencer

It may be pure speculation but some reports are saying rob ryan will try to get spencer in New Orleans, which i would welcome instantly
Look at rob ryans history of getting players from former teams to join his new team

Dallas Cowboys Could Lose Anthony Spencer to New Orleans Saints

I'll welcome it.

He would instantaneously make our D better, and he may also be the leadership key our defense needs. I love the idea!.

I SAY SIGN HIM, AND QUICK!

Loomis, work your freaking magic!

Yes, I used a big word to look smart.

I understand he had good numbers in his contract year but boy he sure as heck showed me a lot in 2012. Would LOVE to see him follow his old coach and play for the black and gold!!

Re: "Reports" say Rob Ryan will try to get Anthony Spencer

I love the idea! Boy, things sure would fall into place pretty damn nicely... Just think, Anthony Spencer and Martez Wilson at OLB. I think the general consensus is that Martez will be playing one of the OLB positions and that we would draft someone for the other side... But with Spencer we'd have a proven vet at that position instead of a guy who's never played it and a rookie.

I would welcome that move!!

Re: "Reports" say Rob Ryan will try to get Anthony Spencer

There's definitely a need for a guy like Spencer, because Galette is not the answer at the other OLB spot, but if that guy is in fact Spencer will remain to be seen - I guess it'll depend on what type of a pay-day he is looking for.

Re: "Reports" say Rob Ryan will try to get Anthony Spencer

wow, this would be an amazing upgrade. Spencer might put us over the top from being a good LB core to very good. If we get this guy and Matt Eberflus., Ill be so excited.

Who did Schemeless Spagnuolo bring with him?

Dallas will do everything they possibly can to keep him away from us...

I'd like to see him on our team though, if he's willing to play for pennies

Yeah; provides cheap depth and is stellar on special teams

We like cheap depth. Now if we can just get some stellar special teams....

Like already stated he brought with him Chamberlain, but also Marquis Johnson.

It's funny - or maybe not - that both of those guys looked really good in the limited time they were able to play during the preseason before they suffered their season ending injuries, especially Johnson could've made a difference in the Saints' backfield.

To me that illustrates how complex Spags defense was and also how a journeyman "zone" CB could look like our best CB from day 1 of training camp.

Marquis Johnson was a round peg in a round hole.

Watch and learn....

When restructuring any contract is an option the Saints cap figure isnt even written in pencil, its more like chalk.

Why are so many doubting the ability of Galette?

Just a question for everyone. All I hear is how we need someone opposite of Wilson, but I am puzzled as to why Galette shouldn't be the first option in that position.

Junior has never had to play in coverage. Martez was drafted as a LB coming out of Illinois so he has some experience with that. They both have great potential as pass-rushers, but the question is can Junior drop back into coverage?

Exactly my point... both of these guys are just as unproven for the OLB position, but for some odd reason everyone thinks Wilson is a shoe-in and Galette is getting kicked to the gutter.... what forum is this? We used to be in love with Galette...

Re: "Reports" say Rob Ryan will try to get Anthony Spencer

Wilson has always been a linebacker until this past season. Junior never has. We love Junior's potential as a pass-rusher... But he will need much more coaching than Martez to play LB.

Re: "Reports" say Rob Ryan will try to get Anthony Spencer

I want to see Junior succeed because he's shown flashes of being a pass rusher but at some point his potential better met his ability. Line him up and use him like the Steelers used Greg Lloyd, rush the quarterback. I'm sure RR can figure out some way to cover the space he is leaving open

Re: "Reports" say Rob Ryan will try to get Anthony Spencer

hate to sign him to big deal and a few years later we are back in the same position as we are now with smith.

If we make this move on defense i say go with youth and acceptable contracts.

Face facts Drew must be protected and that is priority #1

we have a 3 year window to get back to the super bowl

OT is were the money will go

Just like they did with Pat Swilling. Some of these so called LBs in 3-4 defenses are nothing more than stand up DEs.

Well we are not given the information as fact. It is at this time, speculation.
But it makes sense to let Rob Ryan have at least one player of his choice.

It seems as though ChrisXVI already answered your question:

And those are the main reasons why I also think that Galette might not work out as the starting OLB. If he is going to play either one of the OLB posititons in a way that those positions are usually played - meaning he won't just be a glorified 4-3 DE who's brought to the LOS with his hand on the ground - he would have to learn a lot of things about how to read and react to different plays and seeing them unfold from a different vantage point on the field as opposed to where he lined up as a DE. Wilson's background of playing as a MLB and a WLB in college allows him to already have a better understanding of how to play a position outside of the front 4 (or front 3 in this case), and he was always projected as a tweener who could suit the 3-4 OLB position quite well. Another thing that worries me about Galette is that he has a history of not being the fastest learner, although some put a lot of that on GW's shoulders saying that he couldn't get all of the potential out of Galette, but I'm still reserved as to if that was truly the case in the end. It might take Galette a fairly long time to adjust to the new position and the responsibilities that go a long with it, on top of adjusting to a whole new base scheme and a new DC.

If the Saints want to have an impact front 7 next season, they'll have to man the other starting OLB position with either a veteran like Spencer or they have to pick a rookie from the draft who can be a starter at that position from day 1. I'm not "hating" on Galette by saying this, I'm just trying to evaluate the situation objectively without letting the "story" behind the player cloud my judgment.

I think Spencer would be a great mentor for Junior, just like Lewis did in Baltimore with all the lb.'s he played with. Someone has to be good at their respective position to transition another and Spencer aint' half bad, could be a great thing!! With Juniors size and speed he could play any lb. position in a 3-4.

Even though he is not the long term solution he might have a Darren Sharper type of impact.
