How long does this team have left?

Not to look past this season but how long does this team have left?.
The defence on the whole is pretty young, but the offence is starting to age rapidly and together while sitting on big cap numbers.
Going into the start of 2014
Brees 35
Thomas 29
Sproles 31
Colston 31
Moore 31
Evans 31
Grubbs 30
Streif 31
Bushrod 30

At what point do you start dismantling the offense?.
Do you wait and hope that some project players in the next two drafts will be ready?,or do you start trading players while they still have trade value and start going after the top draft picks and free agents with the cap space saved?

Re: How long does this team have left?

Our scouts always manage to find fantastic offensive talent in the draft but not so much with the D
It will still be a mix of free agents and draft picks but my prediction is by the 3rd year of Brees' contract we will already have drafted a QB to learn under him unless the staff want to stick with Chase Daniel and give him a fair shot

I don't think we trade any offensive players and I honestly think Mark Ingram will be given the chance to be a full on feature back seen as our RB veterans most likely only have 3-4 more years before they are gone

Re: How long does this team have left?

Drew has 5 to 6 good years left.

I don't think teams have windows like they used to. A good GM that fills holes with moderate free-agents, drafts BPA and occasionally lands a prize free agent like Drew Brees will stay competitive year in and year out.

How are they ageing faster than anyone else?

True Dat with HGH .... they should be aging more slowly.

Re: How long does this team have left?

As long as Drew is performing, I don't think it matters how old his surrounding parts are. This should be...

"How many years do you think Drew has left?"

lee909 02-22-2013 11:28 AM

Drew still may have 3-4 more years if we can keep him healthy but trying to keep any sort of line in front of him with that contract is going to be hard.
2014 cap hit $18.4ml
2015 $26.4ml
2016 $27.4ml
Though the last two years could be cut.
The question is do you keep him through the contract and hope to lower the cap numbers, cut him loose or trade him away if the right QB becomes available and restart the offense.

My point about the team ageing rapidly is they are all the same age and need long term replacements in the next couple of years. Its the sane question,do you keep them till there best days are gone or let them go for players/picks that can offer more in the long term

Re: How long does this team have left?

I don't find this as a big concern. There's the draft and free agency... we can slowly supplement players in to resolve the issue of aging. No point in breaking up something that's still in it's prime.

Re: How long does this team have left?

I think Brees has 2 year max. before his slide, and if Daniels is not the answer, draft 1 in the late round and see what he could bring to the table.

Re: How long does this team have left?

You take one day at a time ... One season at a time.

Age is irrelevant, performance is everything. When they start getting beat out at camp they are replaced.

I am not a fan of anything but performance, bring in a rookie that out performs any in those list in the off season and we should have a new starter. Including QB.

Any other approach is just cutting your own throat.

It will be what it will be.... If Drew is ok with a substandard line so he gets paid then he will not be getting paid for long. If he can say healthy with a substandard pass blocking line at a cheap price then so be it.

Some people are ok with $8000 in rim riding on $50 tires.

For as long as we have Payton and Loomis.

Two years? I think he's got at least 5. Why do you think he's only got 2 years left?

Honestly, even with a seriously compromised o-line, Drew has been the least injured player on the team.

(knock on wood, knock on wood, knock on wood)

I'd say we know for a fact 3 years of strong play from Drew, but 4 years sounds more like it with a reputation like his. He had 1 injury to his arm that was noteworthy, and he technically only got better after that injury.

What does the future hold for NFL players? Skill positions like QB were shorter lived in the recent past before the "no-hit" rules. I think they'll last longer in the post Goodellgate era. We seriously could see an end to "the sack" one day soon (let's hope not).

Skills players starting after 40 may become a reality in this generation.

So true, and with Drew's work ethic, and his skillset being a typical quick release drop back passer, I think only a freak injury would prevent him from playing until he's 40.

It now takes about 1 training camp to prepare a franchise QB for the NFL.

Why in the world we even think about drafting someone right now?

They'd be on another team 2 or 3 years before Drew even thinks about retiring.

where are you getting these numbers from? colston is 29, sproles is 29, bushrod is 28, moore is 29...granted most will be a year older during next season, but i don't get why you're adding an extra year to just about everyone you mentioned or why you're more concerned with their age over performance.

Given soon we'll become the FFL(Flag Football League), this may be a given.

Athletes these days are also much more well conditioned. And with the heavy rotations, the wear and tear on their bodies are lessening to pair along with the rule changes.

I think Drew has an elite 2 years, really good 3rd, and a solid 4/5th years left in him... barring injury of course.

You're right. Drew is 34 and will be until next January 15, 2014 (DOB: January 15, 1979 (age 34))

Drew just turned 34 one month ago... from 33.
He'll be 34 for the duration of the 2013-2014 season.
He'll hit 35 late in the playoffs (January 15, 2014) just before the NFCCG during our march to the Superbowl!

Just a guess like all of this is, but not many play at a high level for as long as he has, believe me I hope I'm wrong but I don't think he will. On the flip side do I think he could manage a game another year or so after, yes!!

2016 it all ends

Drew Brees $40,000,000
Jahri Evans at Guard $12,000,000
Marques Colston $17,700,000
Ben Grubbs at Guard $15,900,000

all of them FA in 2017

talk about the writing on the wall.

Colston will probably be done. Brees, Evans and Grubbs will restructure.
