Saints, Will Smith reportedly working on restructuring his contract

According to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, the New Orleans Saints and defensive end Will Smith are currently working on restructuring his contract to to lower his cap number and help him remain with the team for the future.

Jason Cole @JasonColeYahoo
Saints are working on a restructured deal for DE Will Smith. Not done, but progressing.
12:43 AM - 23 Feb 13

The Saints have to redo Smith’s deal since they’re $15 million over the salary cap and he accounts for $14.5 million of that.

I can live with that.

Papz convinced me that while he may be a weee bit undersized, he's still big enough and from what I'm reading about this 1-gap 3-4, Smith may be a good fit on the weakside.

I just hope we don't overpay for him. 3 to 4 mill/yr sounds about right.

I'd love to see this happen. A lot of people are throwing Smith under the bus, but I'd love to see him stay with the team.

Dude has played hard since he has been here.
He's not the best in the league but he's ours.
If the price is right? Helz Yeah!

Re: Saints, Will Smith reportedly working on restructuring his contract

The new salary would have to be in the ballpark of $3-4M, like Danno suggested, in order for this to be a good move considering the future of the Saints' defense, because it won't be a 1-year contract with those figures.

Still, I'd love to see a youth movement, but the "dead money" already invested in Smith makes the restructure a more appealing option than it would've perhaps been otherwise.

Never threw Smith under the bus... He couldn't get out of the way on his own.

smith has redone this contract more than once. so some where he has to get a pay day. he is owed that

I like it. Keep him here at a price that makes sense.

Hate to lose a solid starter. No way to make him up on the FA market with our budget. However, price has to be right

How about all those signing bonuses that have come with those restructures, not to mention that with the last restructure the last year of his contract - which was originally optional - was picked up by the franchise.

Good. I'd really like to see him retire dressed in black and gold. Just not yet.

I'd love to see a restructuring but I don't want to see him get paid more than he's worth.

Re: Saints, Will Smith reportedly working on restructuring his contract

I hope he gets released... his production was piss poor for the last few years. He has been the most over-payed player on our roster for sometime now.

The biggest problem I have with Smith coming back is he may be taking Hicks position at DE. Hicks could be a star for us but he needs to get the chance playing full time. If Smith stays that wont happen.

This is a new D... out with the old and lets turn the ship around.

Is it the very same $12 contract for Jimmy Graham? ;)

I would throw him under the bus, if I was the bus driver he would have already been under the bus!!

I agree. Saints D is a 'fan favorite' and that is part of the reason we consistently suck. Play these young guys for a change. It boggles my mind how we saw such little of Martez as well.

Free up the roster spot now, not next year..........cut bait and run like hell.

Re: Saints, Will Smith reportedly working on restructuring his contract

Well everyone is doing this now, you constantly restructure contracts to move money out of the salary cap hit and into bonuses and guarantees that don't count against the cap. The Saints and Loomis are actually at the forefront of the league in terms of doing this, one of the best in the business. Eventually all contracts around the NFL will be worked like this, and the odd exceptions will be the players who DON'T restructure every year or couple of years.

Loomis is such a master bean counter, it's like he just loves counting those darn beans -- he loves counting them so much that it's not enough to just count them once, like most normal GMs do, Loomis counts and recounts them again and again, and moves them around into little piles, and is always looking for an advantage.

If a player refuses to play out his contract, why should a team be forced to pay out either?

Re: Saints, Will Smith reportedly working on restructuring his contract

I'd rather they just cut him, it's time to see if these younger guys are worth keeping

Re: Saints, Will Smith reportedly working on restructuring his contract

What I want to know is, is he actually going to restructure and spread out more money down the road, or is he taking a pay cut? He needs to take a drastic pay cut, or he's not worth keeping around.

I would imagine that it's a restructure involving prorated bonuses and a pay cut - I can't believe a simple restructuring would do the job cap-wise.

Re: Saints, Will Smith reportedly working on restructuring his contract

cutting him would cost the saints to much money also.

plus his deal has been redone what? twice already.

the saint are stuck and they must pay the piper one way or another

It certainly wouldn't do the job in the long run. A simple restructure would help out some this year, but would screw us down the road. With his total lack of production, he absolutely HAS to take a pay cut, or there is no reason to have him around. I don't want him on the team, period. It's not anything personal against the guy, but I just don't think he has anything left.

Cutting him would put a hit on the cap this year, but we wouldn't have to pay him for the remaining years, at least. To me, he's too unproductive now to keep paying him down the road. The day he signed that deal, was a huge mistake by the Saints, and this was bound to happen.

When he was at his best, he wasn't worth half the money they gave him.

hagan714 02-25-2013 06:44 AM

Re: Saints, Will Smith reportedly working on restructuring his contract

cap wise next year is a better year to do a cut if a cut is going to happen. this year is not the year to go that route. we would be cutting our throats.

Get the cap straighten out in 2013 which was at 20 mill

then in 2014 we will not be looking at such a big hole cap wise. we will have more wiggle room.

we have to deal with two major issues

2014
Jimmy Graham $665,140
Malcolm Jenkins $11,000,000

Zach Strief $1,750,000
David Thomas $1,500,000
Charles Brown $1,310,000
Jonathan Vilma $1,000,000
Will Herring $1,000,000

This is looking the Guaranteed money each player has coming to them in their contract years

much easier pile of dung for Micky sort through and work his magic

Look at Vilmas number. That is why we are trying to spread the hit out. that way can do some additions in FA or resign some players.

Jenkins is an UFA after next season according to Spotrac, he had $11M guaranteed in his contract, which might explain the mix-up.
