Trading up with next years picks.

After reading SI offseason preview in which they mention, that the Saints would consider moving back into the second round by trading next years picks. I have mixed feelings about it. Saints have shown that they are not afraid to make these ki d of moves. Given the change to a 34 losing a 2nd rd pick in a deep defensive draft is troubling. How do you feel about trading future picks for Immediate help.

If the right players are there and they feel it's worth the risk, I'm all for it. Lots of quality players in the mid rounds.

Oh and frick Goodell.

Re: Trading up with next years picks.

I would not mind doubling up on pass rushers. Say J. Jones and A.Okefor. NT like J Jenkins or Jesse Williams

lee909 02-24-2013 10:50 AM

If the right player is there go get him.
Do what we have to do,be aggressive if the players are available.
I'm hoping we do it next year for Jake Mathews if he continues his progression.

As badly as we do in the draft, it's just too bad we can't trade the damn things for some cap space.

Re: Trading up with next years picks.

i just do feel so needy in this draft to freak out on the defense side of the ball. i blame coaching ego for 60% of the defensive troubles

so trading back in round 1 and getting a second or a third is ok.

or/and trade back into the second like paz said " for the right player is cool also.

Yeah, I mean if the player is right and the trade terms are acceptable... why wouldn't you make that move?

Might be the year to do it, since we're switching to the 3-4.

Re: Trading up with next years picks.

I think we will see more 34 but i would not be surprised to see the saints open the season in a 43 for most of the first 8 games of the 2013 season.

As the players are introduced to playing a 34 and players are bounced around to see were they fit.

i will be nervous if the saints open the season as a predominate 34 defense. if so the i fear the same old round peg square hole mentality will rear its ugly head.

Your notion would seem to be supported by the fact that Ryan admitted that he made a mistake with the Cowboys' defense in trying to force his scheme on them far too quickly, so they might - like you suggested - start things off slowly with the base scheme transition.

But then read the yawner thread where Rob threw his keys on Fisher's desk at St Louis because Fisher wanted to stay 43.... If it's Rob, I'll bet we see a bunch of 34 right from the get go.

Yeah, but that "news article" had no factual evidence to back it up, and it was probably as true as my claim that Ryan flew down to New Orleans on an unicorn after things went sideways with the Rams.

Sure.....sell out this year. Have nothing next year.

Re: Trading up with next years picks.

seeing as how we have no idea what might happen/who is going to be available with our current picks or what potential trade(s) will be offered i have to say lets just wait and see...
...but given the fact that this draft seems to be loaded with defensive talent, i wouldn't be terribly opposed to getting our 2nd rounder back.

Naturally you want to have as many - and as high - number of picks each and every year as possible.

Also, every single team wants to trade down in the draft gaining additional or higher picks while still being able pick the guy they've targeted.

And sometimes there's a guy just out of your reach in the draft who you think could have an immense impact on your team for years to come, and that's when you need to balance between all of these realities.

That being said, I would love for the Saints to make multiple trade downs during the upcoming draft and still get all the impact players they have targeted before the draft - even though that's impossible is practice. But I wouldn't be against them trading up either if they thought that there was a player out there who could be an impact player for years to come.

With the latter scenario, I think it would be more beneficial to try and bargain with next year's picks, since the team is now going through a fundamental transition on the defensive side and this draft seems to be full of potential pro bowlers at the positions of need the Saints have at the moment. They certainly can't afford to give up any picks in this year's draft, but they could always exchange picks for lesser ones if that would allow them to jump the few spots they'd need to get a certain player.

I have been impressed by Lane Johnson's. Combine numbers very good for a 300*lb guy. Even if we keep Bushrod RT needs an upgrade. Pick LT at 15 and trade into top of the 2nd rd for bpa defense . CB NT OLB

Re: Trading up with next years picks.

There's no one in the draft for whom trading up is worth the price. If we wouldn't do it, give how desperate we are for quality players, then why bother entertaining a less favorable exchange? We are in "no-man's land" of the draft - too expensive for the talent available, but no talent worth moving up for.

lee909 02-25-2013 11:35 AM

Agree with that.
All 3 top tackles will be gone.

I never wish death on people but I have to admit I really wanted someone to do something to punk ass roger while he was in NO.

My latest fantasy. scenario. Saints send 2014#1 to Rams for 2013 #2 and #3
Rd1 Jarvis Jones OLB
Rd2 John Jenkins NT
Rd3aBrandon Williams NT
Rd3b Terron Armstead OT
Rd4. David Queensbury
Rd5. Tyraun Matthieu CB/KR
Rd6. Joe. Kruger DE

We could cut Bunkley and Harper and sign a FA SS

Why in the world would you want to cut Bunkley? He a good fit for our new defense and it'll cost us nearly as much to cut him as it would be to keep him.

Re: Trading up with next years picks.

Felt like Bunkley did not earn his big money. And Harper cant cover and isn't worth his contract #.Hope I am wrong a out Bunkley.Don't think I am about Harper
Honestly I am bored a just trying to stir up some conversation.

Re: Trading up with next years picks.

Bunkley's game will be much improved next season simply because he won't have to line up next to Ellis anymore, and that goes for all the other D-linemen as well.

Bunkley will be a better fit in the 3-4, as he did very well as a NT in Denver's 3-4, but not as well in Philly as a 4-3 DT.
