Whats the cap situation like now?

Does anyone that understands a little bit more than me on the cap situation know what our cap situation is now?

I know loomis has saved us about 11 Mil, by restructuring colston, grubbs, hawthorne and evans

Does this mean we are only like 3 Mil over now? Hopefully brees can restructure and it would drop by a hell of a lot

Cut vilma and smith and we'll be sitting pretty

Depends on what you believe.
Loomis said we where not $15ml over like the media keep saying. He said it was close to thst(Im sure I read it was just over 10ml).With Lofton and these restructures we must be just about there.
Vilma/Smith have been offered new lower payed deal according reports.

La Canfora also reported that the Saints have offered new, discounted deals to defensive end Will Smith and linebacker Jonathan Vilma that would allow them to stay. No specific details of such offers are known, but league sources have confirmed that the Saints and players have been discussing the possibility.

That would take us under the cap and then its into tenders for DLP,Casillas,Ivory and a decision on Bushrod.

As far as I know the 2013 cap is not formally set yet either. We may get a few mil in relief. With the 11m in relief I "think" we are in the 3-6 mil over range

Restructuring Vilma, Smith and Harper are key.

Oddly enough, i don't recall any talk about harper restructuring...

wait for the contracts to be filed with nfl they are always adjusted. but we are close to the break even point at todays cap, but even that has been rumored to be not truly set and could increase a bit more.

all i now is we are neck and neck with todays cap with a few players left to rework or cut so we can sign or draft a LT.

Vilma can not be restructured with out an extension, this is his last year...

Smith and Harper are in pretty much the same boat but only having 2 years left...

Restructuring requires taking salary and converting it to bonus money which is prorated for the remaining years of the contract or extension for the cap...

I believe in the case of all three their days as a Saint are numbered to the end if their existing contract.

In essence Loomis has no room to work with these guys by choice.

Well, Vilma is smarter than an amoeba. He might extend his contract and take lower overall $, with a higher bonus. I understand he wants to break into coaching anyway. Wouldn't it be a good path into the coaching fraternity?

I'm sure he would like to extend.... I don't see the value in offering him an extension at this point in his career.

And yet the Saints still have some salary chopping to work on as the team is somewhere between $4 million and $5 million over the salary cap.
