Best GM in football.

That title has to belong to "Magic" Mickey Loomis. He may not be the best talent evaluator, but he doesn't need to be. The coaching staff and scouts have that under control. However, when it comes to numbers, other GM's should take note of how this guy manipulates the salary cap and makes it his *****. This current string of contract restructuring just solidifies that. Just thought I would get that out there.

If he was the best, last year would have never happened.

Last year probably would have happened if Mickey Mouse had been the GM.

Re: Best GM in football.

I don't think he's the best but I think it's unfair to judge him based on last season... lots of extenuating circumstances. To be the best, you've got to be the complete package. He excels more in one aspect than the other.

By last year I mean the "scandal" that lead to suspensions and ultimately a 7-9 season.

Oh, I know what you were referring to. I just don't think he's the one to be pointing the finger at there. It most likely would have happened with anyone who was GM for the Saints as long as Gregg Williams was employed.

Without re-hashing what seemed to consume all of us for the better part of 10 months, I disagree. Loomis knew.

I never said he didn't know. I just think that any GM that had been there would have known. Would they have put a stop to it? I doubt it.

I think Loomis is a great GM, but like Papz said; he excels in some areas while maybe not being as strong in others - still one heck of a GM.

Ozzie Newsome is another really good GM, who I wouldn't mind having if Loomis had to be replaced for some reason.

Best? Maybe.

I do know that as far as the job duties of a GM, he's a very good one.

He listens to what his coaches want, and then gets it for them.

He is obviously great with numbers.

The only downside is we have over-paid numerous players during his tenure and our last 5 drafts have been pretty poor.

I'd imagine he's looking to shake-up the draft scouts if this continues, if he hasn't already. Changes in the scouting department often go unnoticed.

SOMEONE should have. Only the team President and Owner are above the GM.

True Dat... and they have missed lately on the defensive side. We drafted Al Woods DT who now plays in a backup role for the Steelers. Perhaps the addition of Ryan, aka Jabba, will help us in talent evaluations for the defense. Speaking of which.... is Spencer still sought after by the Saints?

Sorry...

...I know everyone is in divine rapture over his cap magic in the last 48 hours of rolling the debt forward (he must be a Democrat)...

...but the drafts, and lack of oversight and "institutional control" nets him a "F"...

So he may get an "A" for lecture but he's flunking the lab...

He needs to get his scouting and personnel house in order because these drafts and poor fits just aren't going to get it...

...the only GM that gets an "A" is the one with the current Lombardi trophy...

Politics creates negativity, I am just one of those people that believe that it isnt necessary in sports talk because people will only use it to degrade or attack the thoughts and opinions of others

As long as he keeps drafting under achievers and over pays for average talent I'm going to have to say that he is not the best.
Also, this is not a political discussion board.........however, sometimes I can't stop myself either.

Re: Best GM in football.

Apparently Spags brought with him some new scouts when he got here a year ago, which might have been a reason they did so well with the defensive draft picks last year.

IDK, but hopefully those scouts didn't leave with Spags if they were infact responsible for picking Hicks and White.

+1. I think Ozzie has done a hellava job over the last 10 years or so as GM. Loomis has been solid for the most part.

Yep, the locals here claim they are 'trying' really hard to resign Spencer but their main focus at the moment is locking down Romo to a long term deal.

+1. Until JJ releases that GM title (he never will) & have Romo as their leader, the Cowboys will continue to flounder in a miasma of mediocrity.

Re: Best GM in football.

I agree we have done terrible with our highest picks so he flunks there. I never could understand that one. I also thing hhe is outstanding with his other duties. Mickey does not play football so even if he knew what was going on it doesn't matter. That blame stands firmly on the players shoulders. Even Payton's loss should not have hurt the defense. We had a D coordinator that should have got that side of the ball going in the right direction. Smith, Ellis, Vilma, Harper, Shanley probably others also all need to be sent packing. So in this respect he needs he needs to man up. All of these players can be replaced I would say fairly easily with the money that would be freed up. I would have thought we would have seen some of this happening already.

I hope they make Romo the highest paid QB in the league!

He says things like this : "Our scouts do a great job of finding players that help us in the third, fourth or fifth round."

Makes me think they don't spend as much time evaluating #1 and #2. Maybe thats why we usually miss on them :)

lee909 03-02-2013 12:30 AM

Something needs to be done with the scouting for the top rounds.
While its not fair to call them all busts,so many high value and high priced(old CBA)have been wasted.
Who was the last first round pick worthy of that number ?

Under the old CBA, I think they hit 3 in a row with such players from 2004 to 2006:

2004: Will Smith (no matter what the situation is now with him; he deserved the 1st round pick)
2005: Jammal Brown
2006: Reggie Bush (just the buzz his pick created alone justified a 1st round pick, and he did have 1st round talent even though maybe not the 2nd pick of the year)

lee909 03-02-2013 02:52 AM

I remember a bit about the hype around Bush but the other two where before my time as a fan.I was watching football but as a neutral.

Mickey is good. Not the best. If he were the best, we'd have cap space as the Patriots do every year.

Well its debatable why they are always looking good. One thing for sure, they don't overpay for anyone and they know how to let players go. We have always held on to players longer than we should and the fan base don't help the cause.
