Saints March 1st cap status

1 Attachment(s)
NFL Cap for 2013 is $123M

Saints active contracts $132m
Dead money 836k
2012 cap rollover 2.7 m
Top 51 = 128M

present cap status $126.2m

Approx Delta -3.2m over

lee909 03-01-2013 06:07 AM

Not too bad with Vilma/Smith having new deals offered and Harper big numbers easily changed.
Only worry is we need 5/7ml for a LT.
Might be able to make room for a LT and hopefully a good FA or two if the new deals are low enough.

Re: Saints March 1st cap status

We still have a little ways to go before 12 March to get the Top 51 under the cap, then we have to keep it there through the draft and free agency.. not out of the woods yet, although we can see the tree line finally.

Re: Saints March 1st cap status

thanks for putting this up. I'm assuming this still reflects Vilma, Smith and Harper?

lee909 03-01-2013 06:44 AM

Got 30.2ml wrapped up in Vilma,Smith and Harper.
Shouldn't even be paying half of that.

And they probably won't .... maybe they will restructure Brees next year.

Re: Saints March 1st cap status

IMHO Vilma and Harper are irritations, Smith is like a big fat armor plated bloated mosquito. If Smith has a season like 2009 then he will just be a medium mosquito...

More than anyone else on the team he has a huge delta between his contract and his performance value.

Did anyone see the latest slough of FAs released?

Yeah I heard about the ones with the Dirty birds. Honestly I didn't see the John Abraham release coming.

We've got a lot more work to do, especially if we want to resign Bushrod(which I don't see).

The cap savings from the Vilma/Smith/Harper renegs is probably close to 15 million.

So yeah....Flacco gets a 6yr 120.9mil deal......highest paid player in history....

Until Rodgers gets his deal. LOL.

lee909 03-01-2013 11:17 PM

Wow
Had that Safety/CB in the Denver game not made a terrible play and left give up a easy touchdown in the dying seconds would the Ravens even have offered him $15ml year?.
The man played exceptionally well in the playoffs but his form in the regular season outside of Baltimore was closer to Kevin Kolb than a elite QB.
The deal for Brees suddenly looks a bit better.

How much does Rodgers get?
I'm starting the over under at $22ml
Either $110ml over 5 years or $132ml over 6.

I think that 5 year figure is just about right.

Re: Saints March 1st cap status

the fact flacco got paid so much is a joke... you ask even Raven fans and they'll tell you that.. He is not elite in my book..However its a good thing for us because Brees's contract will now be less than our NFC counter-parts like Ryan and Rogers to name a few. The high salaries of these players will hurt those teams even more.

Flacco has one good season surrounded by talent and a good D... I think we got off cheap with Brees now lol

The QB salaries are getting to a point wher teams might be starting to look for a decent guy that can get you there but won't be elite and break the bank. Oh that was Flacco....

If you think about it Bress' contract set the new market for Qb's therefore its just going to go up and up everytime a new "elite" Qb comes around. Which could in effect hurt other team's bottom line making it harder to get talent because of how much cap room they take up....

But with that said....if the cap is going to make a major jump like they say in 2015 because the TV money kicks in it might not hurt as much......

Probably won't hurt as much for us either...especially if Brees does restructure next offseason...pushing the high cap numbers into the years where the cap jump will give us much needed relief...or make it less of a hassle to get under when we need to.

Cap scheduled to escalate significantly (more so than recent escalations) in 2015. Just in time for Matty Fleice to kill the Falcons in 2014. ;-)

Flacco's deal in a nutshell is Drew Brees's deal plus a dollar!!!!
