Saints make it clear they want to keep Jermon Bushrod

1 Attachment(s)
Earlier this week, Saints tackle Jermon Bushrod said that he hoped to start negotiations soon on a deal that would keep him in New Orleans for the long term.
It wasn’t clear if the Saints felt the same way about keeping Bushrod as their left tackle, but it is starting to look like both sides want their relationship to continue. Albert Breer of the NFL Network reports that the Saints have “made it clear” that they want to keep Bushrod and that they will be getting to serious talks on a contract next week once they iron out their cap issues.
With a glut of tackles heading for free agency, it seemed reasonable for the Saints to wait and see what the market brought in terms of prices for a left tackle. Like the Giants did with Will Beatty, though, they seem to be putting a higher priority on keeping their own guy than playing musical chairs with their quarterback’s blind side.
The Saints started working on that cap space this week by restructuring the deals of several players, including wide receiver Marques Colston and guard Jahiri Evans. They’re expected to do more trimming in the coming days and weeks, apparently with the intention of keeping Bushrod along with whatever other moves they’ve got planned for the offseason.

I like it. He is not a superstar but he is good enough.

Who on the Saints "made it clear"?

I'm cool with keeping Bushrod. Might as well have some cohesiveness along the O-line... I mean, he's done well enough protecting The Franchise.

Is Bushrod giving us the hometown discount?

In this NFL.com article Bushrod was ranked 44th on the available FA list:

Top 85 free agents: Mike Wallace heads best available - NFL.com

Quote:

44) Jermon Bushrod, OT, New Orleans Saints: Bushrod will be the perfect test case for proving what an average starting tackle with a random Pro Bowl nod gets on the market.
I know it's just an article by the good folks at NFL.com (Gregg Rosenthal), but it has seven OTs ranked higher than Bushrod - and I don't think he's too far off in making that assessment.

2) Ryan Clady, OT, Denver Broncos
7) Sebastian Vollmer, OT, New England Patriots
8) Andre Smith, OT, Cincinnati Bengals
10) Branden Albert, OT, Kansas City Chiefs
21) Jake Long, OT, Miami Dolphins
25) Phil Loadholt, OT, Minnesota Vikings
43) Sam Baker, OT, Atlanta Falcons

I'm just worried that they'll overpay Bushrod... :-(

I think someone already pointed out that most of those are RT's.

Still, a good RT can play LT and vise versa. I know that those positions normally do require slightly different skill-sets, but if a player is a good OT, he can line up at either side of the O-line.

I wouldn't mind swapping Bushrod for Albert if the money was even close between the two.

I think they're two different skillsets. A good RT doesn't necessarily have the quick feet and long arms to be equally effective as a LT.

DJ Fluker (OT Alabama) is going to be a dominant RT in this league for years. I doubt he'd break the starting line-up on any team as a LT.

An exception doesn't make a rule. :-)

But I do understand what you are saying and I do agree with you, but what I'm saying is that a large proportion of top talent LTs could line up as RTs and vise versa. I'm not saying they'd be as good in the other positions than their natural position, but they could do it without a major drop off in the performance. Baltimore Ravens, for example, lined up Bryant McKinnie as both the LT and the RT during this past season.

Also, the fact that Bushrod is ranked so low within the OTs should be even more concerning when given that LTs normally are more pursued than RTs - without giving too much creditability to this ranking in general.

Bushrod will want elite money I'm afraid. I would rather get a LT in the draft. Sign him to a long term rookie contract and save the money. Cohesiveness is good but so is quality protection.

Even if we keep Bushrod and I hope we do. We need to upgrade at RT and add quality depth.Resigning Bushrod will mean we will likely wait later to address this postion.I still think we will draft OT.

I like Bushrod, don't love him. Seem like he's already hit his ceiling, and the ceiling wasn't all that high.
