He's better suited as a 3-4 tackle. I believe we'll see a drastic improvement in his play. I hope we go after Anthony Spencer. A pass rush would help our secondary more then anything.

A secondary will help our secondary even more

Unfortunately Dallas slapped the franchise tag on Spencer a short time ago according to reports out of Valley Ranch.

Not necessarily a bad thing... at least it keeps the Saints from overpaying for his services and adding another potentially troublesome contract to their books.

As far as Bunkley having restructured; I'm glad, because it does signal that they have belief in the guy and that he'll probably be around for few more years. I do agree that last season was a disappointment, but it's really hard to judge any defensive player harshly based on just last season - doesn't help players like Ellis who've sucked almost their entire contract. I think Bunkley will fit the 3-4 much better and hopefully his monster upper body strength will finally be on show.

Its also two years in a row that Bunkley graded out very well according to PFF stats (he was #1 in the NFL against the run in 2011) . And grading out well on that 2012 unit is quite an accomplishment.

We need to improve every position in the secondary. That won't happen in a year. We can improve pass rush in a year though. One person could make the difference.

He didn't seem to stand out to me but he did his job well enough to get a thumbs up from Danno. He graded well and that is what really matters. results....we don't see that on defense. Anyway, I'm glad we've got him and the FO likes him apparently.

The downside of his grades are that he wasn't a full time player. He's been basically a 2-down DT.

Thats why I think he needs to be in a 2 man rotation. Most teams already do that though.

Here are PFF grades for our front line (2012 so grain of salt)

Defensive Ends (out of 109)
Jordan 66
Smith 108
Galette 19
Wilson 33

Defensive Tackles (out of 148)
Bunkley 29
Ellis 118
Akiem Hicks 29
Johnson 42

You can't blame Bunk's for his 2012 performance...or anyone when they're playing alongside Ellis.

I'm gettin' a little concerned that Ellis' contract hasn't reductured him right out the door. You think they're going to try to put in a Bunk- Ellis NT rotation? I'm thinking The Bunk is going to do right by us as NT. Ellis? Not so much.

lee909 03-04-2013 09:25 PM

Ellis is out of contract.

What's that mean exactly?

Ellis contract finished at the end if the season,he is a unrestricted free agent.
He won't be a saint next year unless we offer him a new deal.

Actually, technically, Ellis is still under contract up until March 12th when the free agency begins and then he'll be free to negotiate a contract with any of the teams in the league.

Until then he is under contract and the Saints could potentially negotiate a contract extension with him, but hopefully they won't.

lee909 03-05-2013 12:33 AM

Keep your technicalities.
I'm happy with the thought Ellis won't be a Saint next year.

If he stays I'm blaming you for mentioning he could sign a new deal

Re: Brodrick Bunkley Restructures Contract

i feel better about this deal maybe. cap and carryover it had to be done.

Ellis is gone let see if he stand on his own,

If last year was play showed me anything about him he can be doubled teamed out of the play over and over again.

better get busy in the draft and FA at NT. we are going to need it.

Ok Bunk go out there prove me wrong.

Re: Brodrick Bunkley Restructures Contract

Sorry about the hijack, I've just been a little worried about seeing Ellis on the field again this year high fiving ball carriers as they'd run by him. Good to see Bunkley on board with the restructuring. Kind of getting a feeling any of the high $$$ -except Drew- who don't are on their way to somewhere else.

I really hope Bunkely can be the guy we need at NT in the new defence. We would need a backup for him thou.
