Saints Next Kicker?

Florida prep placekicker drills field goal from 70 yards in training

You probably havenít heard the name Jonathan Semerene unless you are a true recruiting junkie. After all, there arenít too many people who keep close tabs on place kickers.

Yet Semerene is definitely worth a close look, as he proved by drilling a 70-yard field goal while training with kicking coach Brandon Kornblue, as initially dug up by USA Today. Yes, 70 yards. If that went through in a game, Semerene would be the new national record holder for a field goal at any level.
Somewhere, even Washington resident and 67-yard field goal maker Austin Rehkow is impressed.
Given the strength of his right leg, there is absolutely no reason to believe that he couldnít deliver that kind of a blast in a game during his senior season. The Weston (Fl.) Cypress Bay placekicker clearly plans on competing in college, yet he hasnít received any officials scholarship offers as of yet.
We should all expect that to change in the days ahead, if the full range of his made field goals are taken into consideration. In one session, Semerene connected successfully from 70, 67, 65, 55, 50, 40 and 30 yards. What was that phrase Peyton Manning said when Adam Viniatieri trotted out on to the field to earn the Colts a win?
Money. Clearly, Semerene is working toward that track. Based on this training reel, he sure seems to be on the right track.

What separates kickers like this is how high they can kick over the blocking line.

If he cant get the ball over the blockers, hes useless.

Looked like he was getting it high enough to get it over a line to me. Kid has got a weapon there.

He also had a more than brisk wind at his back. Look at his shorts. You can get that help on a wide open practice field, but don't count on it in a real stadium.

Acually many kickers prefer to have the wind blowing against them since it lifts the ball better.

But if this kid can kick a 70y with the wind he'll be able to hit a 60yds without.

He hasn't entered College yet.

Maybe we could have this discussion when he is at least a Jr?

70 yards isn't unheard of when the NFL kickers are warming up before a game, but it's a whole other thing to do it in a game against opposing special teamers and with the pressure on to score the points for your team.

And that would have been blocked; no question the power is there, but can you do it with the pressure on...

If I'm not mistaken, in this video he also gets to decide when to start his kicking motion, which is a completely different thing from having to kick it when the ball is snapped and placed.
