Free agent dust kickin but no cap room...

I know there are a lot of free agents out on the market that could help the black and gold out but how could we possibly afford them? Loomis has been a genius in recent years crunching numbers but how could we possibly sign a big name plus our draft picks?

This is a question I have been asking myself for a while and I just don't see how it could happen. I feel like a lot of big name guys want the big bucks so not only will it be hard for us to keep all pros on our team, but other teams as well.

It seems like this trend of more and more money that players want will be tough for a lot GM's to keep a good cast of players together as a solid team.

What are your thoughts?

The FAs the Saints need will have to decide if they want $ or a legitimate shot at winning a Super bowl!

Blame? Front office and the unions.

right now our hands are pretty much tied. we are on the hook for to much money either by keeping players or releasing them. I believe the saints sold out for another run at the super bowl in the remaining years of drews contract using a 43 defense. well that went down the toilet last year and then switching to a 34 dug us deeper into the hole.

Now there plenty of big names out there but the level 2 and 3 FA are very good also. for the next two years this is the shopping market for the saints. then again they always shop here and to there credit have down very well.

Thought we could create space by letting Harper, Vilma, ellis and Smith go

No one really thought that the Saints could afford to sing any big name FA s last offseason, but they ended up signing Lofton, Hawthorne and Bunkley, although with heavily back loaded contracts.

So, I wouldn't put anything past Loomis, but I'm really concerned if the Saints in fact already signed Galette to a 4-year/$12M contract, because that cap space could've been used better in my opinion.

The cap was initiated for two reasons.

Put a ceiling on players salary's.. No longer can Jerry Jones throw money at a player with out feeling the pain of the cap. The cap is calculated based off of league revenue, Owners can not go out of pocket in an effort to go above and beyond.

Again keep Jerry Jones from buying a Championship.

The Saints are not very interested in FA, their focus is not to build a shut down defense, and our offense is already prolific.

Keep in mind, cutting Smith leaves us with 6.7M in dead money... So if we cut him to pick up a $3M DE the transaction would cost us $9.7M against the cap and we would be paying $9.7M for a $3M DE.

That's still better than having a $3M vet DE on the roster with a $14.5M cap hit. ;-)

Got to get the money straight first before we look that way unfortunately.

Blame everyone? Aren't you forgetting the players whose estimate of value far exceeds reality in most cases?

As for the union (singular), are you objecting to minimum salaries for years of service? Are you objecting to payments into pensions and long term medical care? Are you objecting to preventing teams from locking players up counter to "free market" principles?

Just so you know, I'm bored and looking for a Monty Python style argument.

Waiting for the dust to settle and see what we have brought in. I'm hoping for a Greer type of impact player not an A. Franklin type of player.
