Exactly at some point you have to cut ties with these guys....they're not helping at this point in their careers....

well we all kinda saw this coming. there always next year

lee909 03-12-2013 03:24 PM

At the same time you don't want to pay them out and watch them play elsewhere. All depends on the details of the restructure

Still waiting on Harper news. I'm beginning to think maybe a trade is involved.

Crap!!! I wanted Smith gone soo badly! It would be nice if we could get something for Harper.

How are we still over the cap after all of this? Were we 30-40 million over it originally and not 20 million?

Re: Holder: Smith and Vilma Restructure- Remain Saints

we went back over the cap when the brain trust gave Jr. that new contract

Why can't we just cut our dead weight?
Bills did, eagles did, why can't we cut the players that aren't productive anymore

Ain't gonna lie, not happy about Smith remaining with the team. Bite the bullet and wax him already!

Its never that easy. There are multiple miilions of reasons why we haven't yet.

And 2012 throws in a lot of mis-information that make it difficult to determine who dead weight is.

Re: Holder: Smith and Vilma Restructure- Remain Saints

I do hope that the restructures include severe pay cuts and no additional years on their contracts.

I can't deny it; I'm a bit disappointed by this even though it was the most probable outcome - I would've wanted a more "clean slate" beginning for Ryan's tenure with getting rid of some of the overpaid veterans.

Re: Holder: Smith and Vilma Restructure- Remain Saints

Oh for God's sake... Another season of our coaches starting over-the-hill and unproductive defensive players is in our future. I know that keeping them doesn't necessarily mean that they'll still be starters, but c'mon... You know they will.

I doubt that. We would have taken a $7 million cap hit had they been cut.

Maybe just me, but I think these guys still provide value to this team. Will Smith could be a nice fit as a 3-4 DE which places emphasis on stopping the run; something he does very well (and even though he's not a speed pass rusher, he had second most sacks on the team).

IMHO, these guys are good role players... what we really need is to get impact pass rushers at the 3-4 OLB positions. Getting a few speedy guys to get to the QB will solve a lot of ills on this defense.

Now that we're under the cap there's no urgency to address the Harper issue.

We may hear nothing about it for a while.

Re: Holder: Smith and Vilma Restructure- Remain Saints

You guys all say you wish they were cut outright? We have a $7Million cap hit from them if we cut them! I don't care of we put them on special teams or have them getting Gatorade for the starters - we can't just cut them and eat $7M. At least this way maybe we can trade them each for a 4th, 5th, or 6th round pick now that they have attractive salaries, or can get situational rushes or special teams play for our $$. If we cut them we get SQUAT for our $7Million.

But you're not taking into account the money they'll - potentially - be paid on top of that dead money.

If it was both of them just for $7M this season it would certainly be more acceptable than the $23M their cap hits would've been this coming season without the restructures (Smith $14.5M & Vilma $8.7M).

You definitely could get quality talent with $16M and "eat" the hit you take in dead money in the process.

Good point Torfino. They should be more attractive for teams to trade for.
I hadn't considered this before.

btw, welcome to the community.

I guess we know till we see the numbers. If we take a $9M total hit then we got a nickel ILB and a situational rusher for $2M. And what price goes on their leadership?

I personally hope we trade them though.

Yeah, it's kind of hard to know what to make of these restructures until the terms are released.

we got time. we are going to add 2nd and 3rd tier fa anyways. let the market prices get set and the big spenders get done. colts are the big spender and winners so far. miami spending big but so big i can not say they are winners

Bushrods market value will determine everything. i bet thats why he is talking to the bears already. getting a feel for the cheese out there for him. i bet the FO is waiting on that info more than other and seeing whats left out there for options if he moves on

Yeah, my only concern is that Bushrod is gone, Clady was franchised, Volmer will likely resign with the Pats, so either we pay through the nose for Jake Long or Andre Smith (who was great last year but as an RT), or we have to trust Charlie Brown to stay healthy or hope we can get someone in the 3rd round who can start for us come September. Or if there is a second-tier LT in the market that I don't know about perhaps we can get them. Those are some shaky choices if you ask me.

But our front office is genius at drafting mid-round talent at tackle so we need to pray they pull it off again this year.

**Is there another tackle out there who I am forgetting, 2nd tier or not?

Not sure if they fit into the 3-4. Maybe now that we've renegotiated their contracts they could be easier to trade? Kind of like a sign and trade?

Re: Holder: Smith and Vilma Restructure- Remain Saints

Why does this organization continually hurt itself by signing/keeping these type of players around for their presumed leadership?

Smith and Harper are going to end up being the new Scott Shanle.

Vilma, if he shakes the injury issue could do well in THIS 34 scheme. Playing the WILB is much different than what he played in NY. That being said Hawthorne is a better fit.
