How about Kevin Kolb for backup QB?

Kevin Kolb is about to be released by the Cardinals.

Anyway, how about Kevin Kolb as a backup for Drew Brees? Too expensive?

Then again, the Raiders might seek him out as their starter since they don't have a real strong slate of quarterbacks currently. I always liked Carson Palmer, but he seems to be on the downside of his career.

In any case, wouldn't Kolb be an excellent backup if he doesn't land as a starter somewhere?

Thoughts?

Oh and I still think we should make an effort to get Kerry Rhodes, also released from the Cardinals.

Geez, guys, what you think, that we're gonna trade out draft away for Tom Brady to back up Drew?! C'mon. Kolb is a very serviceable backup, particularly when he's healthy (which he hasn't been in AZ while he and the stable of QBs there were getting sacked to death). He has shown that if you give him a couple seconds in the pocket and some decent receivers then he can do something decent. It's all about coaching, too. I don't think that anyone would argue that Andy Reid and Sean Payton aren't much better coaches than Ken Whisenhunt. I wouldn't mind seeing Kolb get a chance in the black & gold as long as the price is right.

I also wouldn't mind seeing Cassel or Leinhart get a shot. All at the right price of course.

Kolb is garbage..
1. Can't stay healthy. if we ever need him he'll get hurt so i have zero faith in the guy
2. Even when he is healthy the guy is very timid... can't have that in your QB... ever
3. The guy flat out quit on his team in Arizona... doesn't speak much about his work ethic.

Pass, pass and pass...
I'd rather a rookie out of college or Sean Canfield

I confused him earlier with another QB........but I've always liked Kolb. He played hatd against us in Philly I think.

I'd take him over the crap that's out there. Only concern as a starter has been durability. I think Cards were 4-1 before he got hurt. We just need to make sure he has a Nerf clipboard, and we're good to go. :)

What we need is an injection of drama to clear away the "Bounty Gate" fog. I thought I saw Benson's jet headed toward Kiln, Mississippi!! LOL

Cassel is long gone.

Ryan Nassib may make it to round 4 if Buffalo doesn't jump on him.

I'm with you. Keep the costs down. All we need is a guy to hold a clipboard while Drew does his thing. If, god forbid, something were to happen to Brees, then we just need a guy to lose as many games as possible to improve our draft position.

New head coach Bruce Arians and new general manager John Keim have no specific ties to Kolb, though Keim was in Arizona's front office when the deal was made, and Arians no doubt would like to move on from a hyper-expensive quarterback who has started just 14 games and thrown just 17 touchdowns in his two seasons with the team.

Where would Kolb go upon his release? Believe it or not, there's a lot of fire behind this smoke: Rumors that he could indeed compete for and win the starting job with the New York Jets have quite a bit of weight to them. New Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg filled that same position for Andy Reid with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2007, when the Eagles selected Kolb in the second round out of Houston.

Re: How about Kevin Kolb for backup QB?

I don't think Kevin Kolb is old enough or rickety enough yet. Remember how rusty and ancient Mark Brunell looked out there, in his last game with the Saints against Carolina in 2009? But boy, he could sure hold a pressure field goal in overtime, couldn't he. That's what I think Payton wants. Somebody old, off the couch who can speak QB speak, but who has that veteran calm under pressure, and who can hold field goals in a snowstorm or tsunami and maybe run the fake once in a blue moon. I suspect it was Carmichael was the one who was all about grooming the next young Drew clone, with Chase, but my hunch is that with his return Payton reverts back to his previous MO of, super old journeyman backup QB with the 1970s-looking chin strap.

Kolb could not hurt. He has seen action. He did get rocked in zona which I believe caused a lot of his happy feet. Throw him 3 mil over 3 years and see if he bites. If so it would be a nice pickup

why waste 3 million?
If Brees got hurt the next quarter of the same game we'd need 3rd string. The guy is garbage and gives up. I think that's my biggest issue with him.

I can understand your point. Here is mine; He has the talent, he has the experience and would learn under Brees. And as for the 3 million that would be over 3 years. We would pay that for a scrub off the street.

Looks like we will have to draft a project. There's no one smart enough or experienced enough left to tutor under Brees/Payton. Who would be a good 6th round pickup?
