Hope the Saints don't draft this guy - OLB Jarvis Jones

Georgia All-America OLB Jarvis Jones unimpressive at Pro Day

Jarvis Jones, the Georgia outside linebacker who had been projected to fall to the New Orleans Saints in the upcoming NFL draft, may fallen even further after his Pro Day workout.

Georgia's Jarvis Jones ran a 4.92 40-yard dash at his Pro Day.
http://media.nola.com/lsu_impact/pho...9438-large.jpg
Jones, an All-American who led the nation is sacks and tackles for losses this past season, was unimpressive at his Pro Day workout, running the 40-yard dash in just 4.92 seconds. He broad jumped 9-3 and had a vertical leap of 30 ½. He did 20 reps on the bench press, according to multiple media reports.

Many scouts were eager to see the 6-foot-2, 242-pound Jones work out after his skipped drills at last month's NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Even before Jones turned in his less-than-stellar workout numbers, his high draft status had been in question because of a medical condition. As a freshman while playing at USC, Jones was diagnosed with spinal stenosis. The condition already had dropped Jones, who had been projected as high as the No. 2 overall draft prospect, in some mock drafts. But he apparently checked out well at the Combine.

The condition certainly didn't hinder Jones at Georgia, where he registered 28 sacks in his final two seasons. But his Pro Day performance could prove costly.

The Saints, who are switching to a 3-4 defense under new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, are in need of a 3-4 outside linebacker with pass-rushing skills.

But it remains unclear if any team will take a chance on a productive college player, with limited athletic ability, early in April's draft.

Both colleague Larry Holder and I had the Saints taking Jones at pick No. 15 in our original mock draft before moving him higher in the draft in our latest mock draft.

If we can trade down into the high to mid 20's and still manage to get a guy like Jarvis Jones, as well as pick up a 2nd round pick, we'll be lucky.

good... means he'll fall to us for sure... If he is there they should take him in a heartbeat

I got doubts we will go after Jarvis unless hes there in the 3rd round.

a mock draft with the Saints should = BPA at that time.

There aren't 64 players better than Jarvis Jones in this draft. He won't make it out of the first. No way he's still there in the third.

Jones’s 40 is comparable to the 40 that Terrell Suggs ran at his Pro Day, a workout that had some people downgrading Suggs but didn’t dissuade the Ravens from spending a Top 10 pick on him — and didn’t stop Suggs from becoming one of the NFL’s best defensive players

We should not draft a player with Health problems.

Re: Hope the Saints don't draft this guy - OLB Jarvis Jones

Really torn about this. On his college production and film he was easily one of top defensive players nationwide. Poor measurables and medical concerns have cooled my opinion. He was a force in the SEC. Just the kind of playmaker that this team desparately needs at a position of need. I also think that Á.Ogletree and J.Jenkins would be good additions.

NinthWardJay 03-21-2013 08:14 PM

Anybody that says that they hope they don't get a player like Jarvis Jones must not have seen him play. That's really all I can say about that.

NinthWardJay 03-21-2013 08:16 PM

Terrell Sugs ran a similar 40 time to what Jones ran.... Would people have "hoped" that we didn't draft Suggs if be had fallen to us?

So he's not a workout warrior. It's not a big deal to me. I'm more concerned about production and he has a great track record.

If we shy away from the guy because of his health condition, fine... completely understandable. But if it's because he runs a poor 40, I think it would be a mistake. He's exactly what he's advertised as... a pass rusher. He's not a guy where you would drop him back in coverage and track TE's.

Another example of a guy who did abysmal in his workouts... Vontaze Burfict. He was an absolute stud for the Bengals last year.

If he can't rush AND cover, then he's not a top 15 pick IMO.

Mingo , Jordan and Ansah seem to have him beat there.

I'd rather a guy like Mingo myself, but I like Jones.

That depends if you think he's going to be a consistent double digit sack guy throughout his career. Because if he is, he'd definitely be worth a top 15 selection.

Look at Von Miller, Elvis Dumervil, Aldon Smith, among others. The reason why they're on the football field is to get to the quarterback. Athletically speaking, Miller and Smith are far superior to Jones. But I'm not comparing their athleticism... but their main purpose on the field. It's not to cover.

With that said, maybe we're evaluating him to see if it makes sense to take him lower in the first round... which quite a few people are advocating for us to do. Got to explore all our options.

I'm not a Jones guy, but I keep hearing that his in game is great.... That for me is voided by his medical which whether he cleared it or not would make me question him.... He's not as bad as Manti Te'o but he's not a first rounder in my book..... Also #15 is way to high for Jones.... Or Ansah.....

Spinal Stenosis is not your average risky medical condition. Last time I checked, they do hit just a wee bit harder in the NFL.

none of those players covered anybody in college. They were all defensive ends. Jones converted from safety to LB.

I think you have some of that mixed up. Ogletree was a former safety that moved to LB not Jones. Jordan covered receivers and TE's routinely at Oregon.

Re: Hope the Saints don't draft this guy - OLB Jarvis Jones

How often does a defensive lineman run 40 yards during a game? Not often. The fact is, in 2011 he had 13.5 sacks and 19.5 tackles for a loss, and in 2012, he had 14.5 sacks and 24.5 tackles for a loss. So, over the last two seasons, the man has had 28 sacks and 44 tackles for losses. He's also recorded 155 tackles over the last two seasons (averaging 77.5 per season). Plus he plays against quality players being at Georgia. He's been productive, he's able to get after the quarterback and makes plays. I'd be ecstatic if he falls to us. Getting a player of his caliber coming off the edge is what we're looking in a 3-4 rush LB.

I have no questions about his abilities, the dudes a stud. My only question is can he play 10 years with his injuries or will he only be able to play 3 or 4 years. If the Saints think he can play 10 years Id jump all over him.

I don't get too excited or disappointed when it comes to pro days.

I don't think he's a one trick pony. This is from his draft profile on nfl.com:

ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS Versatile linebacker with a chance to play inside or outside. Possesses a very good first step to pressure tackles’ upfield shoulder. Also has closing speed to finish the deal and short-area quickness to keep contain outside and crash down on inside runs. Strong tackler with excellent length and upper-body strength to wrap up ball carriers. Gets under the pads of tackles, keeps his feet churning, to maintain leverage whether holding the edge or bulling his man backwards. Brings heavy hands, can rip off to get around the edge or cut inside to stop quarterbacks from stepping up in the pocket. Works through double-teams if the quarterback hangs onto the ball in the pocket. Holds his ground against pulling guards and fullbacks. Capable of locking up tight ends off the edge in coverage, also sorts out multiple routes in his direction to make a play on the correct one. Gets his hands up to affect passing lanes.

WEAKNESSES One-year starter. Inconsistent using his hands to disengage from better blocks and to beat cut blocks from running backs in pass pro. Lacks an ideal frame to get much bigger and doesn’t have the growth potential to the bulk teams want at the position. Will need to prove he can stay with NFL ball carriers in space when dropping into the flat. Not particularly smooth in deep drops. Doesn’t have elite bend around the corner, and could use a spin or other counter move to keep tackles guessing. Missed the last five games of the 2009 with a neck injury, part of his senior year in high school with a broken thumb. There is some concern about his long-term durability due to his spinal stenosis condition, the same ailment that has caused some players to call it quits, including Marcus McNeill, Chris Samuels and Michael Irvin.

Then you obviously haven't taken a look at his medical, this spinal thing would scare the living s&*t out of me if I were a GM, plus bad pro day... Some team is gonna bite, but I think it would be a mistake to bite on Jones in the first round, I feel the same way about Manti!!!

I agree and like Papz earlier stated, if the Saints passed on Jones because of medical concerns I'd be completely fine with it, but if they'd pass on him because of Pro-Day results - then I wouldn't be as happy about it.

If Jordan and Ansah are off the board - like they in all likelihood will be - then a trade down to the 20s to pick Jones and an additional 2nd or 3rd rounder would be ideal in book.

Just got my SiriusNFL radio back working so I'm hearing a lot of yapping from scouts/experts that say he doesn't really look all that dominant on film either. Good player, but not great, struggles to run (not a natural runner).

There were a few who didn't like him as a top 10 pick before any of the medical concerns or workout measurables happened.

You guys need to relax on this Spinal thing. It was mis-diagnosed. There was a big write up about it. I don't have time to go find the link but its out there. He is totally medically cleared.

Re: Hope the Saints don't draft this guy - OLB Jarvis Jones

I had no idea anyone had been crazy enough to project him to fall to us, though I've certainly been wishing he would.

If this helps him fall to us, I say great. I laughed when I read the part in this article where it said he had "limited athletic ability"... That is truly hilarious. I can't comprehend what happened at his pro day, but frankly I couldn't care less. This guy was more dominant than Jedeveon Clowney. He showed great speed/quickness and reaction skills. The guy must have been sick at pro day, to run a time that slow. I do know that there is a difference between straight line speed in shorts, and football speed. You don't see him getting dominated by the first good team he plays like Manti Te'o. You seem HIM dominate everyone in the best conference in America. We would be insane not to snatch this guy if we get the chance.

And why do all these writers keep dismissing his recent medical report, which was more or less a clean bill of health? I'm not worried about it. I'm not even going to assume he falls to us.

Exactly, I was wary of him earlier because of the medical situation with his spine, but since then it's been cleared and therefore I don't see any medical reason not to pick him.

I haven't seen him play though, so I really have to rely on scout reports and what you guys are saying about him.

Exactly. Who cares about workouts when you've done what Jarvis has.

Speaking of Burfict, I can remember hearing people rave about is speed and athleticism going back to his high school days. When the draft came around and I heard his stock was tumbling, I couldn't believe it. He had apparently gotten lazy and consequently out of shape, causing a poor showing at the combine, or pro day (don't remember which one). I kept saying that if we take a flyer on him late and light a fire under him, it would be a major steal. I could've been wrong, but as it turned out, he made the Bengals look like geniuses.

There's nothing more annoying than listening to some annoying person like Mike Mayock overreacting to everything they see in a workout. " I tell ya what. Thith Jarvith Jonth guy ith really gonna be a rithky pick for whoever pickth him. He'th put up great numberth, but you worry a little when you thee that 40 time"

Can it, Mayock. You've made a fool of yourself enough times.

Re: Hope the Saints don't draft this guy - OLB Jarvis Jones

I'd also like to add that 11 of his sacks last year came in SEC play... so he wasn't padding his stats against scrubs. 13 tackles 3 sacks against Florida and 6 tackles 2 sacks against Alabama.

Jarvis Jones Stats, News, Videos, Pictures, Bio - Georgia Bulldogs - ESPN

So if the guy is underperforming and doesn't look great on tape, just imagine if he starts "looking better". That's scary.

nycsaintfan 03-22-2013 10:05 AM

Re: Hope the Saints don't draft this guy - OLB Jarvis Jones

A part of me really thinks that pro days and or the combine is somewhat over rated. I don't think there is any excuse for the performance that Jones had yesterday, but what does the tape say? Can the guy play football? That is what it comes down to.

Honestly, what concerns me more is the medical at this point. If he is cleared to play and we can get him at 15 or lower, I can't see this being a bad thing.

lumm0x 03-22-2013 10:09 AM

Re: Hope the Saints don't draft this guy - OLB Jarvis Jones

While I will agree that his game film does not look insanely dominant, this guy did it for 3 years in the SEC and certainly wasn't flying under the radar doing it. Everyone knew he had to be blocked and/or doubled and he was still stacking up the stats. The day they put a QB in a 40 yard shotgun I'll be worried about his ability to get to the QB. Initial burst and technicques are far more important when it comes to a pass rusher than a 40 yard dash. His game film proves he can do it versus solid competition. I would have no issue if we saw this guy's name on our pick.
