Jason La Canfora reports that San Diego are hoping to re-sign Vaughn Martin, but rather inexplicably they face stiff competition from Philadelphia, Detroit, New Orleans and New England.
We say inexplicably because outside of the occasional game here or there, Martin has constantly graded as one of the worst 3-4 defensive ends in the league. His -12.8 grade from last year was the second lowest of all his peers.

Then why would we be interested in him.

Just wondering how Hicks graded? Sure Hicks is only going into his 2nd year, but you have to keep in mind that both of them came from Canadian Universities, and therefore the level of coaching is quite inferior. (Hence the reason I brought up the Hicks comparison).

Martin is a guy with a pretty good upside and may be able to come cheaper.

I would imagine that his poor grades are because he was thrown into a starting role due to injury, where he is probably at the point in his career where his talent level would be more akin to a situational player.

I think he may be worth a look for the right price.

Hicks graded out as 29th best in the entire league.

I can only guess that he was mis-used in SD. He played DE there when his natural position is at DT, especially at his natural size.

He was 6-4, 330 when drafted. SD wanted him to drop weight and play DE, and he got down to 297 lbs.

But he would be used at NT in NOLA's 3-4 right?
