Victor Butler leaves NOLA without contract

Cowboys free-agent linebacker Victor Butler wrapped up his two-day visit with the New Orleans Saints on Friday without a contract, according to a source. It's the second visit Butler finished during free agency without a contract as he originally visited with Pittsburgh last week.

This doesn't necessarily mean the door has closed on Butler with the Saints, but it does open the door for other teams to pursue Butler. Butler will visit with the Browns on Monday, according to a source. The Browns beat out the Saints earlier in free agency as Cleveland outbid New Orleans to land highly sought linebacker Paul Kruger.

Saints Coach Sean Payton said outside linebacker was one of the major question mark positions on the roster and the team is looking to upgrade at that spot.

Yeah.....he must be askin for too much. He left the Steelers after 2-3 days of visiting too and left empty handed. His next visit is the Browns from what I saw on twitter.....if he leaves there without a deal then he's definitely asking for too much.

Wasn't he a backup in Dallas? How much freakin money is the guy asking for?!

Re: Victor Butler leaves NOLA without contract

If he is asking for too much the browns will over pay for him, they have enough money and not enough sense

Id hope he would stay in new orleans with a contract but if hes asking too much for a guy with 11 career sacks then we were right not to sign him, if hes in our price range i would hope it gets done

More then likely he is overvaluing himself. Let someone else over pay for him.

He wasn't all that anyway. We are trying to replace scrubs with starters, not replace scrubs with slightly less scrubby scrubs.
Bring in Urlacker.

I honestly had no clue who this guy was until the media started talking about him a few weeks ago. I didn't even know Victor Butler existed really. The only reason why I wanted him was the fact everyone was talking about how perfect of a fit he would be here... and his familiarity with Ryan. Other than that, his numbers are pretty bland.

I'm pretty sure it's his price point. All these teams needing a 3-4 OLB let him leave w/o offering a contract. I'm not interested in overpaying for such an unknown entity.

I'm with you on this one Papz! I hadn't heard of Butler before this offseason and the Saints making the Ryan move, so I really don't know how good of a player he really is or if he even really fits into what Ryan wants to do?

Re: Victor Butler leaves NOLA without contract

I dunno if this has been brought up yet, but he scheduled a meeting with the Browns. Seeing that they just signed Krueger, I don't imagine he'll be able to get more out of them than any of the other teams he's visited.

How can you compare darren sharper and roman harper? Sharper was a FS and harper is a SS (Mostly known to be in the box to help with run support and covering TE's)

Two completely different positions

I know what your saying but every year or so you get a chance at adding youth and good solid potential to your roster and this year two of the better low risk players were at ILB and OLB.

you gotta try and add a player or two when these lower risk player come available. at least really try to.

its like getting a shot to redraft without as many question marks in those mid rounds.

I agree. He would be stupid not to go and look everywhere Before he decides where to sign.

Saints Coach Sean Payton said outside linebacker was one of the major question marks on the roster and the team is looking to upgrade at that spot.

Butler, who turns 26 in July, played the past four seasons with the Cowboys, serving as a backup to DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer. In limited action, the 6-foot-2, 245-pound Butler recorded 73 tackles, 11 sacks and five forced fumbles during the past four years.

Last season was the best of Butler's career, as he had a career-high 25 tackles and three sacks and two forced fumbles.

Butler, who is familiar with scheme of new Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan after playing in it the past two seasons, was courted by Saints because he could play one of the outside linebacker positions in the team's new 3-4 defense.

Butler must have thought he should have played in front of ware and spencer. Making r. Ryan pay for his choice now than last year. He seems to not want to play for ryan now. It seemed a no brainer when first talked about to me. But i don.t no nota.

I was thinking somewhat of the same thing. Or either realized that the schemes that Ryan will employ will be the same ones that got him fired and he knows that he can't perform well in them.

I really don't think he would've taken the time to come to New Orleans just to get back at RR but I do think he would've come to elevate his market. More visits usually equals more money.

the saints should consider a Shaun Phillips. Ex teammate of Brees and sproles and he's had double digit sacks in 2 of the last 3 years for the chargers who play a 3-4. At the least bringing him in could force butlers hand a little. Shaun Phillips wouldn't be a bad plan B if he's not asking for too much.

Hey, maybe Asomugha and Butler didn't really enjoy playing for Ryan - like we're all assuming.

It's not like N.O. was their first stops...

Phillips would indeed be someone who might deserve a closer look.

I haven't heard too many teams interested in him.. could be a late signing for the minimum. wouldn't be surprised if Mickey doesn't give him a call if he's still available around then.

You probably meant to say that you wouldn't be surprised if Loomis gave him a call if Phillips is still available later on and the market for him had dried to the point where he'd take a vet minimum deal?

Agree. And we can't pay guys like they want to be paid. So the draft is where we're gonna have to make up for it. Been doing a pretty good of it lately so I'm not too worried about it.
