Victor Butler, New Orleans Saints agree to contract

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Depending on the numbers, this was a good signing because he is young, has been playing/learning behind the likes of DeMarcus Ware, and is familiar with Rob Ryan and his defensive scheme. Since it's only a 2-year contract with conditions ...

Depending on the numbers, this was a good signing because he is young, has been playing/learning behind the likes of DeMarcus Ware, and is familiar with Rob Ryan and his defensive scheme.

Since it's only a 2-year contract with conditions that could void the second year all together - there's very little risk involved with this signing.

And the Saints will probably pick another OLB from the draft if a suitable candidate falls to or is available to them at the right time.

“The chance to come in and compete is all I wanted in this free agency opportunity,” said Butler. “After sitting down and talking with everybody, I felt like my best chance to compete and be a part of a winning team was in New Orleans.”

After listening to him speak w/ Deke and Bobby last night, I am even more excited. Guy is very articulate. Makes me so proud to be a Saints fan these days, when sought out free agents make a 3 or 4 team tour, and wind up choosing the Saints...says a lot about where Mickey and Sean have taken our franchise!

Butler is a solid gamble. He is an up abd coming OLB that has proven his worth in a 34. Galette is a complete unknown in a 34. As it was in a 43 his run defense was so so at best and i have no idea if he can pass defend. Besides its a great youth move for the defense that will be retiring players in the next couple of years.

Unless your like me and value production, and of course what the tape showed you, then he would be a steal of a pick at 15 or lower. He sliding because of a bad pro day. But I don't need Jones to run a 4.4 40-yard dash on the field, all he needs to do is get to the quarter back. It looks like he did that more than enough in his college career.

Being that Butler is in the fold now I'm not sure the Saints would make him a priority pick in the first round. But if we were to trade down and he was there, it would be hard not to take him.

Honestly, a part of me would love to see the Saints take Tavon Austin with that pick at 15. I know we don't have a true need for another playmaker. But with all of the weapons we do have, he would make us even more difficult to defend.
I don't think we have no shot with Ansah. There are mixed opinions on how high he'll go because of his lack of experience, though is talent is off the charts. But there is a good chance he doesn't make it to us, which is why I say IF he falls to us.

I completely agree with your take on Jarvis Jones, though. I've been saying those things about him since I first heard about his pro day. The guy dominated every team he played in the most dominant conference in America.

I know he played on the other side of the ball, but I'm going to use this example anyway. Jerry Rice ran a 4.7 at his pro day, or whatever they called it back then. As we know, he went on to be the best receiver of all time.

On a more recent note, Terrell Suggs was said to have a similar pro day. He turned out alright. I'm pretty sure Jones can run faster than what his workout suggested, but as long as he produces it really doesn't matter to me. There are a lot of fast players who have no idea how to produce. You gotta be strong, smart, quick and have no wasted motion. Those things allow you to be precise in your route to the QB or in getting open, or in getting through the hole if you're a running back. Apparently Jarvis does a lot of things well to put up the numbers he has.

I thought about if the signing of Butler changes the plans. I do think it will deter the Saints from taking a LB at 15 UNLESS it's Jones. He's too good, and would fit the system perfectly. Butler should help us, but he doesn't have near the high ceiling that Jones has, IMO. We're talking about a guy who could potentially put up 20 sack seasons. We shall see though. I feel a lot better about our options with the additions we've made.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.

I don't think the signing of an unproven Butler on a 2 year contract will deter us from selecting a linebacker if he's the BPA on our board. However, the signing definitely opens up the possibilities with what we can do with the draft pick. Whether it's taking a LT, trading down, or whatever else situation that may present itself... something I wasn't as open into doing prior to filling two positions of need via free agency.

Agreed. This is why I don't think any linebacker but Jones would be selected. I gotta think that if he's gone the best player available will not be any of the other linebackers. They could stand to go a number of different ways. Obviously I could be wrong, but I'd rather have an OT or Safety than to have someone like Mingo. I like Mingo's athleticism, but he's too unpolished when we have other needs, in my opinion.

I don't see Ansah as a linebacker. But it seems he's being viewed that way by some. So I guess I should consider him as the one other linebacker possibility.

I'm really not that high on any of the tackles who will be available when we pick, to be honest. But Johnson seems to be the best of them.

I still like Ansah and Vaccaro, if either of them drops to us. I doubt we'll have a shot at Jarvis Jones, otherwise I'd put him in there too.
I agree Johnson would be the better pick. I doubt he will be there though. I have seen many mocks having him go in the top 12 every time. And I think the only reason Luker would go as late as early rd2 is because of the depth in this years draft at OT.

With all the defensive signings in free agency, IMO they draft an offensive player
