Luke McCown Signed (1 year)

Luke McCown - QB - Saints

NEWS: Saints signed QB Luke McCown to a one-year contract.

ANALYSIS: McCown, 32 in July, quietly spent last season as Matt Ryan's backup. As things currently stand, McCown projects to back up Drew Brees this year because they are New Orleans' only two quarterbacks on the offseason roster. Chase Daniel left for Kansas City and roster yo-yo Sean Canfield hasn't been re-signed.

Oh man, I hope Brees stays healthy even more! One of the few things worse than having no backup is having a McClown. Maybe we'll be able to draft somebody.

His arm is going to get quite the workout in practice. I still think Vince Young would be a better choice.

Oh well, something about this guy irks me and it's not in the least that he has that Failclowns stench on him.

Re: Luke McCown Signed (1 year)

We will draft a QB, McCowan will be a camp body for competition, then released when beat out by the rookie.

Only plausible reason I see for signing him.

FinSaint 04-01-2013 03:34 PM

Re: Luke McCown Signed (1 year)

And then he'll probably return to the Failclowns' sidelines to hold Matty Lice's change of underwear for him.

Wanted McCoy. 9ers signed him today.

Re: Luke McCown Signed (1 year)

Everybody has been clamoring for a back up QB since Chase left. It doesn't matter who our back up QB is. If Brees goes down we're done. Any back up would suffice. We just need to have our eye out for the eventual long term replacement of Drew...which I think when Drew retires we get a free agent like we did with him after Aaron "Laugh At My Picks? Brooks.

Since we're going into the Season with McCown, I hope they get Landry from OU in the later rounds, would be an excellent project for a few years.

Jones will go in rd2.

Teams fall in love with Football Factory QBs and are terrified that someone else will take them.

I watched a lot of Landry at OU & his decision making in 2012 has been mediocre at best. The Sooner faithful couldn't wait until his eligibility was done so they could plan for the future. It will interesting to see where this guy ends up or if drafted at all.

I hope you're wrong, I would love to see Langry Jones learning to play QB in NOLA

I would be shocked if any team picked this guy until after the 4th or 5th round.

He can be coached by one of the best in Sean Payton and Drew Brees, big leap from college to the NFL. I didn't say he was ready right now but in a few years things may change for him and his decision making.

I hope that team is the Saints, he had his moments where he played great football. I think the shoulder injury may have played a factor in some of his bad play

Re: Luke McCown Signed (1 year)

Great signing.

He's familiar with our system and is probably no worse than Chase Daniel.

Face it, any team that loses their franchise QB is in trouble. He's a perfect back-up and likely cheap.

The best news of all is that now we won't do something foolish like draft a QB.

voodooido 04-01-2013 08:07 PM

Re: Luke McCown Signed (1 year)

I think this is a stop gap until they draft one in the top 3 rds next year. I believe that next year is the year they bring in a replacement for Brees. That will give Brees 3-4 more year to groom him.

Did you say the same thing about Curtis Lofton?

No, but that's because I like Lofton as a player and he chose to leave the Failclowns... he never chose to be one of them, he was drafted.

No franchise QB needs 3 to 4 years to be developed.

I can't get my teeth to unclench. This signing'll force us to draft one.

Re: Luke McCown Signed (1 year)

If you look at the whole time that he's been here, more often than not the Sean Payton model is to have a semi-washed up, old journeyman veteran guy for a backup QB. The guy with the rickety knees and the old-school looking chin strap. THAT'S a Payton backup QB.

Chase was really the exception to the rule, and he may have had more to do with being the holder for Hartley, since they had a history together. I like this move. All I care about is the guy having nerves of steel when it's time to hold a FG with the playoffs or Super Bowl on the line, and this guy has seen the playoffs before, he's held field goals in the playoffs, he's not going to be freaked out by the pressure of holding the kick in a hostile stadium, indoors, outdoors, in a snowstorm, downpour, etc. etc. And he can speak "QB speak" to Brees about what is happening on the field, while wearing the baseball cap. That's all we really need.

FinSaint 04-02-2013 11:55 AM

Re: Luke McCown Signed (1 year)

I think Morstead might be the holder now that Daniel is gone, since he did it for Kasay when him and Hartley were sharing kicking duties in the preseason.

Very importnant part of the kicking game.

I don't know if he will make it past camp.

I like that we have the Falcon's play book though. Probably keep him around while we pick his brain, lol.

Or he gets to know the Saints' - truncated version at least - playbook, gets released before the season starts and is picked up by the Failclowns in a desperate attempt to copy the Saints' offense - just like last year.

It doesn't matter who our backup is frankly. If they see the field we are either dead in the water or laying a beat down.

Not quite sure what you thought is but Rogers sat for 3 years coming out of Cali. He sat behind Farve. Maybe you forgot.....

He didn't sit to learn, Favre kept not-retiring. He was likely ready in year 2.
