Kiper's Latest Mock Draft

Mel Kiper Mock Draft 2013: Analyzing ESPN Guru's Recent Projections | Bleacher Report

15. New Orleans Saints—OLB Jarvis Jones, Georgia

If you are going to switch from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4 base look, you have to start stockpiling draft picks.

The Saints are in a bad spot because of the Bounty Gate scandal taking away their second-round pick, meaning No. 15 will be their only pick until the third round unless they decide to pull off a trade to move back into the second.

Adding the SEC sack leader and conference Defensive Player of the Year is a good start, especially with a number of players adjusting their normal roles to fit in the new 3-4 scheme. Jones is one of the biggest question marks in terms of first-round placement, but a quality fit on a defense that is both trying to bounce back from a poor 2012 and is changing its defensive strategy, as well.

Bull, we need a solid pick to get right after it. Not a crap shoot on a player that might not belong in the first round.

Re: Kiper's Latest Mock Draft

YEA WE WILL STAY AT 15 AND GET A BLUE CHIPPER!
We have a plethora of RBs and LBs not to mention Roman Harper is gone already in my mind for a 5th rd pick.
So no need to trade back unless the guy we want to draft "Mingo, StarL, Trufant, Jordan, Ansha, or Rhodes or Vacaro" if all these guys are gone yea we might trade back unless we pull a wildcard and pick Tavon Austin ourselves lol! SO ME I WOULD USE A FEW OF OUR PLAYERS THAT EITHER DON'T FIT OR WE JUST HAVE A GLUT OF TO GET MORE PICKS! Yeup I'd trade Harper for a 5th, Ivory or Thomas for a 2nd and if it's Ingram I need a late 1st Like maybe Green Bày's pick! There are alot of things in the works for accumulating draft picks!

Re: Kiper's Latest Mock Draft

Its easy to see the Saints moving down into the 20s and getting a late 2nd round pick.

But its also not out of the question for the Saints to stay at 15.

You must be smoking some good sh..
If you think anyone will part with a first for Ingram and 2nd for Thomas/Sproles.

Also talent wise Jones is superior to Ansah,Mingo and Vacaro. Jones is a beast,he is quite possibly the best pass rusher in the draft. The question is how bad is his spinal stenosis. If he is cleared and there at 15 he could be a steal. There was a reason he was a top 5 pick throughout the college season. He has dropped back on both medical issues and other falling in love with the combine kings times in no pads.
Give me a player that has proven himself on the field over one from the weight room or track.

I wouldn't mind if we selected Jones at #15,

I think Ansah and Mingo will be better NFL players then Jones. Jones IMO is the college football Tim Tebow on the defensive side of the ball. Great college player whose style wont mesh in the NFL. Slow and not that strong is not a good mix for an OLB I a 3-4.

I love Ansah and would take him over Mingo if both are there. The ceiling is much higher for Ansah and Mingo. Jarvis isn't gonna get better IMO, now after saying all that I really hope we trade back and pick up a 2nd rounder. No way in the world will we get 2nd for any of the Saints RB's. Might be able to net a 3rd for Ingram, but I think I'd hold on to him for another year.

I like Todd Mcshays mock better, he has us taking Alec Ogletree.

Ansah just looks more of a 4-3 end from what i have seen from him.

Agreed, there sure seems to be a lot of boom-bust type defensive players in the top 20.

I don't think there's much difference in 15 thru 40. Unfortunately that seems to be the consensus so there won't be value in trading down. Instead of a mid 2nd, this year may only yield a late 2nd for the same tradedown.

The trader-uppers have the advantage this year.

Re: Kiper's Latest Mock Draft

The best hope we have of trading down is if a player that Miami/Bengals/49ers really wants falls to us.They may be willing to give up a second or two in Miamis case to get the man they want.
I dont see it happening myself.

triman 04-09-2013 05:17 PM

Re: Kiper's Latest Mock Draft

I bet that the first rd will see a lot of trades. As much as teams are talking down QBs in this draft I think we see 3 or more taken. That causes players to drop and teams that have their eyes on certain players will move to assure they get their guy. There's several teams with lots of Pi ks to maneuver. I think it is going to be wild draft.

The two names that give us the best chance at trading down..... Tavon Austin, and Kenny vaccaro,

Austin is the speedster every body wants. Minnesota, St. Louis
Vaccaro to San Fran for a their first, a second and a fifth would probably be the deal I would try to make though.

Their 31 could get you Marcus hunt, datone jones, Alex okefor....

Like all contemporary journalists, Kiper's sources of information, i.e. agents, college staff, coaches, players want some loyalty in return so what makes his columns so informative are also, compromised...

Jarvis Jenkins' case of spinal stenosis scares the hell out of me and there's no way I'd invest anything higher than a fourth rounder on a player with a pre-existing condition like that...

Some of you may remember when we had one of the toughest defenses of all time and our weak link was at cornerback; well we thought we had finally struck gold with CB Vince Buck and guess what ended his career?!? Younger fans may remember him from Cottman Transmission Commercials...

Yep, thats why a bazillion dollar industy spends a bazillion dollars on scouting these players and trying to determine which prospects are most likely to develop into NFL studs.

Do you seriously think randomly pulling names out of a hat would yield better results than how teams currently do it? Seriously?

I suspect its the hair that people don't like, not the facts.

I would trade any of our running backs except Ingram. I might even let him go for the right price. All these rule changes are going to keep getting geared torward passing and away from running. Plus backs arent going to last with having to stand straight up and take all of the hit. they cant even duck anymore. Roger needs to hurry up and die or something.

I don't put too much worth in mock drafts, but I do think Mayock is one of the best evaluators of talent - clearly not among the best when it comes to appraising team needs and player rankings.

Kinda. I think there are enough near and far misses that if we did just pull names out of a hat, lets say, based on a given position, the end result would be close enough to give considerable pause. I do believe that. Very seriously. All the things they measure a player for guarantee nadda. In the end you can't get inside a guy's head. That's where the randomness is.
