BREAKING: Saints sign S Jim Leonhard

1 Attachment(s)
The New Orleans Saints added another piece to attempt to beef up their defense as safety Jim Leonhard signed a one-year contract contract with the team Monday, Leonhard said via Twitter.

Leonhard spent last season with Denver as mostly a backup. Leonhard was a starter the previous four seasons with the Jets and the Ravens. Leonhard, 30, spent his first three seasons in Buffalo (2005-2007).

I really like the signing... especially for depth purposes. I wanted us to sign him a few years ago prior to him signing with the Jets. I'm a fan.

Go Leon! Can Leon do it all?

Re: BREAKING: Saints sign S Jim Leonhard

Probably want depth, in case Harper gets cut. IIRC Leonhard is primarily a free safety, but can play both.

I like him for depth, but not as a starter. It appears he's a bit injury prone.

Re: BREAKING: Saints sign S Jim Leonhard

I'm all for it. It gives us depth that we really need and could allow us to cut ties with one of our current safeties. If that's the direction that the FO wants to go then we can still address safety in the draft and it's not such a pressing matter come crunch time.

He's 5-8, 188 lbs. Only Sproles is smaller.

Would of rather Leon Sandcastle.

Re: BREAKING: Saints sign S Jim Leonhard

I don't really like or dislike this move.

Pros- character guy with some versatility to provide depth at safety and special teams. Cheap. Short term. Allows some leverage to get something done with Harper.

Cons- brings nothing special to the table at all and if he has to start things aren't looking good.

I didn't realize Jim was so small...puts me in mind of Bob Sanders. Yep, one year deal and depth won't hurt.

If we trade him for Tebow we can trade Tebow for 3,4,7 round pics that we can trade down with out first to get a 2nd round pick.

I think he really stood out when he was with the Ravens, but I don't know what he is like as a player these days.

I'm surprised at the lukewarm reception to this signing. Safety is a serious need for Saints. I bet he starts and provides an upgrade for the D.

With Bree's as a QB, I'm rather surprised at the stock we are putting into his size.

A few articles on him from the last 2 seasons

Jim Leonhard is a good player, but he tore his patellar tendon in December. He won't be ready for the start of the 2012 campaign.

Notes: One of the NFL's worst starters in 2011, Sanford got a boost from playing alongside rangy rookie Harrison Smith last year. ... Coming off a patellar tendon tear, Leonhard was eased back in as an effective subpackage player in Denver last year. That may be his ideal role.

interesting... I liked him with the Jets and even flashed some play making abilities with the Ravens but I am not sure this is the best FA signing available, O well, in Loomis I trust!

There is no steak coming to New Orleans.

We can only afford value meals.

Re: BREAKING: Saints sign S Jim Leonhard

Adding depth where needed with a capable veteran at low cost. Nice signing. Did anyone really think we were going to break the vault open in free agency with only pocket change to spend from the piggy bank? The off-season moves haven't been flashy, but they've been pretty solid for what they can afford.

Dollar menu? That's a thing of the past now in this here political climate. Too much overhead.

What flavor hotpocket?

Pepperoni I can see, but this signing is clearly better than one of those spinach and egg ones.

A depth signing, he could make some plays on special teams

Depth, he still has to make the team.

When Leonard was in his prime he was a bad ass. I like the pick up. Lets hope he stays healthy.

Another slow player added to "D". This is Kevin Kaesviharn all over again. Jim Leonard has 1 career interception. 57 tackles is the highest amount he's registered over a season. Not to mention he has a bum knee. I don't like it at all.

Not even close.
His ints over last two years are equal to Jenkins and Harper combined.

My mistake. I was looking at TD's instead of interceptions.

Either way, I don't like him. I'm willing to bet Roman Harper is faster. I rather we draft a safety then pick him up. It is what it is though. The deed is done.

I thought he had signed with another team last week maybe I wrong he's a good player. I thing the Saints have something up there sleeves but I really don't think Harper has and trade value.

Re: BREAKING: Saints sign S Jim Leonhard

Isa Abdul-Quddus and Raphael Bush combined for 3 ints, equaling our starting tandem of MJ and RH.
Add in the ZERO ints they had in 2011?:puke:

Re: BREAKING: Saints sign S Jim Leonhard

He's faster than Harper. He also has good hands unlike all other Saints DBs. If the Saints come up with a pass rush he could have a big impact. If they don't, it wont matter much who's at safety anyway.
