Texas safety Kenny Vaccaro is best bet for New Orleans Saints' pick in NFL draft that's hard to handicap

My pick for the New Orleans Saints' pick? Texas safety Kenny Vaccaro.

Honestly, there are about a dozen players the Saints could choose with the 15th pick in the NFL draft on Thursday night without raising any eyebrows. Most draft analysts and the teams themselves seem to agree that the top half of this year's draft is even harder to handicap than most years.

But after eliminating the 14 prospects most likely to be gone before the Saints' pick (including LSU pass rusher Barkevious Mingo), I like Vaccaro's odds of being the highest-rated player on the Saints' draft board just a little more than Georgia linebackers Alec Ogletree and Jarvis Jones, among others.

The Saints won't reach to fill any specific need Thursday night. But those magnets with each prospect's name on the defensive side of their war-room draft board should be able to win a tiebreaker over those magnets on the offensive side - just like they have with the Saints' top pick in each of the past five years.

And Vaccaro has an excellent chance of being the last magnet standing.

The 6-foot, 214-pounder is widely considered the best safety in this year's draft class, with an impressive combination of hard-hitting physicality and solid coverage skills. He could play either safety spot in the NFL. And he could be an eventual successor to Roman Harper or Malcolm Jenkins, both of whom have uncertain futures beyond this year. If not an immediate upgrade.

With the depth at safety, I couldn't draft Vaccaro or any safety that high. We'll find out soon.

Agreed, I see us going after some sort of pass rusher.

If all the top pass rushers are taken, and we can't trrade down I'd have no problem with Vacarro.

He's Roman Harper with better hands.

Depth at Safety? Where? Vacarro is better then every safety we have already.

Nonsense. Since 1/3 af 1st rounders end up being busts, how can anyone say any College player is definitley going to be better than a 2-time Pro-bowler in Harper and a guy who's played very well for 1/2 his career in Jenkins?

He has the potential to be better than both, but he hasn't proven squat yet.

sure he is one of the few players that is not driven by a lot of hype. you pretty much know what your getting when you pick him

From all indications we're going D-Line or corner in the first round anyway... Safety is the least of our needs

I love Vacarro, and he might end up being better than what we have, but its ridiculous to claim he's already better than the one's we have. They've proven themselves, Vacarro hasn't even made a 53 man roster yet.

Aaron Curry was named the can't miss prospect of the decade several years ago. He's now out of the league and Scott friggin Shanle isn't.

we had the two lowest ranked safeties in the NFL. I say we might need to take a peek at it. We need game changers. Turnover causers. Kenny Vacarro's. Trust in Burna. My insight we lead us to the promise land!!!!

Check Harper and Jenkins rankings when they were in Gregg Williams man to man defense. We're moving closer towards that with Ryan and farther away from the Spags zone scheme.

In fact; Harper will be in the box when Rob has the "46" in short yardage situations... I can see him getting more sacks/tackles now than he did with Williams

I honestly don't see him coming in and playing worse then those two did last year. I truly believe he's the next great safety of this generation. Scott Shanle should've been out of the league 4 years ago. Idk what's going on there....i rather have Curry.

We had numerous players ranked near dead last in the NFL last year, including many still on the team at CB, OLB, DE, and ILB.

Take your pick, every position sucked last year, not just the last line of defense.

Typically safeties are exposed after the rest of the defense blew it.

Typically, but our safeties have been exposed since Sharper hung up the cleets. It wasn't just last year. Harper made the Pro Bowl off tackles. He had a lot of tackles because our defense was poo. A safety should never lead the team in tackles.

We can make excuses for them. A good pass rush helps out the secondary...well...a good secondary helps out the pass rush.

I like Vaccaro, but I'd only draft him if.......

Mingo
Ansah
Jones
Werner
Richerdson
Ogletree
Rhodes
Lotulelei
Jordan
Millner
Floyd
Tavon Austin

Are all off the board, did I miss anyone?

Oh and any of the OT are off the board.

Now that were sure that Mingo won't be there, Ansah won't be there and Jordan won't be there no one else is worth #15.... Let some team deal with the #15 Vaccaro.... Drop and grab picks #ALEXOKAFOR

Yep. If Vaccaro's still there at fifteen, there's a decent chance someone else'll be picking him at that spot. Harper and Jenkins won't lead us to the promised land alone, but they'll at least carry their weight in the proper defense. Be ready to do some rootin' for those two this year, they're going to be a pleasant surprise to many of you. Don't remember I said this and even I won't care in a week or two.

I agree. No worries with Vacarro IF there are no good pass rushers.

What does anyone think about finding a OL with this pick?

If any of the top 3 are there, YES!!!

If those 3 are gone there's probably better choices in the 2nd and middle rounds.

Im not for defending our safeties, or Danno but....

Uhhhh Burna, Vaccaro only had two turnovers last season... He hardly constitutes as a game changer, he's just a guy that won't get you killed.. Hell he's a Malcolm Jenkins clone!!!! Eric Reid and Baccari Rambo are both gonna be better unless Vaccaro winds up on the 49ers.

I watched Eric Reid for three seasons at LSU.

He will hit really hard.

He SUCKS at tackling.

Horrible technique. If I saw it, I'm sure Chavis saw it too. If he couldn't take the coaching then? I don't have hope that he will take it in the NFL.

Pass

for the record I'm a huge Tigers fan

Even though this draft has a lot of depth at safety, Vaccaro would be a solid choice. I'd like to see us go for either Vaccaro or Jarvis Jones (as long as he's healthy). If both are on the board I'm leaning a little more towards Jones because I think we can get a safety in the 3rd round but I'd be happy with either.

If the pass rushers are gone, then look at secondary

Even though our safeties aren't the best, I'd want to get a bigger corner first, I don't think Pat robinson is the answer and greer isn't getting any younger

If all the pass rushers are gone, and a corner is sitting there we like you know SP will draft him, SP loves corner backs

Rex Ryan will make our safeties better I think, If we don't address safety in the draft then I sincerely think this Malcolms last year to prove himself

If the pass rushers are gone, we should take a real long look at OTs. Eleven hours and thirty minutes until the draft...
