Harper has shown ability to hit people in the box.

His coverage on slot receivers and TEs in that area is suspect at best.


The league has changed. A SS that you only ask to give run support is a dinosaur. KV by all accounts excels at both run support and covering slot receivers.

Harper only does one of those things. I will add that his hitting is good. His tackling is not. He goes in a straight line. Lateral quickness is not and never was his strength.

I don't see Jenkins going back to corner. There is a reason we moved him to FS. My guess us Harper is done. I'd replace him and Jenkins if I could.

I think he takes Harper's place but not this year, I think it's NEXT year or even 2015 when Harper's contract is done. With the exception of Reggie Bush and Jimmy Graham, the Saints have a pretty consistent history of NOT throwing rookies into the fire, unless forced into the lineup by injury. That includes the sparing use of Ingram during his first year which had everybody mystified. I bet our first year's look at this guy is going to be watching him chase down kick returns on special teams, just like they did with Patrick Robinson and Malcolm Jenkins. But I like the pick, I'm just not expecting miracles from him right out the gate.

That's all true but Jenkins doesn't seem to be any better. He seems to be only slightly better in coverage, a terrible tackler and lousy against the run.
If Spags were the DC again this year, I'd be surprised if Harper made it to training camp. But with Rob Ryan running the defense, I think Harpers ability to "lay the wood" on QBs and receivers crossing the middle will give him the edge in the safety competition. Just my opinion though, only time will tell.

Payton is on record saying how he loves that KV is very versatile and actually played a lot of nickel in college, how they had to go back and dig up tape on him actually playing safety etc..., so an added answer to this poll should be "neither" or at least "nobody's job this year."
