2013 NFL Draft Individual Grades:

14. Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah: A Grade
I think Sharrif Floyd would have been a better pick because A) he's a superior pass-rusher and B) he doesn't have any sort of health concerns. But this is still a great pick for the Panthers because they needed tons of help on the interior of their defensive line. Star Lotulelei would have gone in the top 10 if smarter teams were drafting there, so Carolina is reaping the benefits, much like other smarter teams will in the second half of the draft.

15. Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas: A- Grade
This is a very good pick by a smart team. The Saints had major issues at safety, and Kenny Vaccaro is one of the top players available. With Matt Ryan and Cam Newton in the division, New Orleans absolutely had to upgrade its secondary. Malcolm Jenkins and Roman Harper weren't cutting it.

22. Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington: B+ Grade
I like Desmond Trufant a lot. I mocked him to the Falcons quite frequently at No. 30, but I guess Atlanta felt like he wouldn't fall to them. Moving up eight spots to land him is definitely acceptable. Trufant should be an instant starter across from Asante Samuel, as he fills a huge need.


18. Eric Reid, S, LSU: C- Grade
The 49ers moved up for... Eric Reid? Why? This safety class was incredibly loaded. I'm sure one of Reid, Matt Elam or Jonathan Cyprien would have been available at No. 31. Reid had issues covering last year, so this pick is highly questionable - especially considering that San Francisco moved up for the LSU product.

New Orleans Saints select Texas safety Kenny Vaccaro with the 15th pick | NOLA.com
But the Saints apparently believe they have their safety of the future in Vaccaro. It remains unclear how the selection of Vaccaro will impact the future of the 30-year-old Harper, who struggled in coverage last season. Although the Saints haven't given any indication what they will do with Harper, they can save $5.2 million against the cap by releasing him.

Payton said he wasn't going to speculate about Harper's future but said there will be competition at the position.

"We'll see how it goes when (Vaccaro) comes in," Payton said. "We want to create competition. If he was available we felt like we were getting an awfully good football player. That kind of stuff will sort itself out."

Vaccaro said he doesn't know what will happen with the incumbent safeties or exactly what his role will be in first-year defensive coordinator Rob Ryan's system.

"I don't even know," he said. "I plan on doing whatever they want me to do."

harper will be here in 2013 cap carry over will save him. the only way is to trade him

carry over into 2014 would be stupid with the cap head aches we face

Well to be fair, it probably has something to do with Harper.

I do have a soft spot in my fan's heart for SB44 players and for dudes who took the time to be nice to my son. I am trying to be objective though.

Seriously y'all gona have me capping again when these stupid questions get asked Harper wasn't a starter last yr what makes you think he's even on the roster after day 3 of the draft. When the Saints didn't even contact Harper's agent for a paycut that should've told y'all he gone!

Obviously if we cut/trade Harper for cap room, Vacarro steps in.

But if all 3 make the team, Harper stays at SS and Vacarro challenges Jenkins for the centerfield FS spot.

Cut Roman Harper immediately which would free up cap space we can use to pick up some pass rushers - like Shaun Phillips who was quite effective in San Diego and who has experience in 3-4.

I think Vacarro will take more time from Jenkins in the Free Safety spot. Harper's been good up around the line. Ryan likes the 46 defense or variations on it. Harper could fit in really well at the safety/linebacker spot.
