League source confirms that $2.6 million of New Orleans Saints safety Roman Harper's salary was guaranteed last month

1 Attachment(s)
A league source confirmed that $2.6 million of New Orleans Saints safety Roman Harper's salary became guaranteed on the third day of the league year last month, which was reported by ESPN.com. Obviously that makes a big difference when speculating on Harper's job security.

Harper is due a total salary of $5.25 million this year, plus another $100,000 roster bonus. So the Saints could still save $2.65 million if they released him. But that option now seems less likely since they have already made such a financial commitment to him - even though they did just draft a potential replacement in first-round draft pick Kenny Vaccaro.

Harper's salary-cap figure this year is $7.1 million (his salary, roster bonus and $1.75 million in pro-rated portion of his signing bonus). If the Saints release him, he will count $4.35 million against this year's cap, plus another $1.75 million against next year's cap (the remaining pro-rated portion of his signing bonus).

(NOTE: If this year's workout bonus counts as extra, on top of the guaranteed salary, then he would cost the Saints $4.45 million against the cap this year).

This will be his last season with the Saints. Sad to say as he brought the wood in years past. Maybe they can turn him into the safety blitzer he once was. Dude still has the thickest freaking neck I have ever seen on a human being.

Sad to say but this is one of the worst contracts Mickey has given....

Harper has played well for the Saints and helped them win games. He's good at what he does well being an in the box safety and rushing the passer. Is he overpaid for his impact and overall ability? Absolutely. But, he's not s bad football player.

It was difficult to cut him last month because we didn't know we were getting Vaccaro. If only we had known...... :(

I hope Harper stays and plays in the box which is where he's good. Cut Jenkins and play Vaccaro at FS. Problem solved.

Thats nonsense. Its not even close. Charles Grant, Will Smith, Deuce McAllister, and Jason David, were much much worse.

Harper has been productive for the majority of that contract.

I agree, Danno. It's really hard to say what kind of player Harper is after a season with a defensive coordinator that didn't have a clue. None of our schemes did him any favors, and, as a D coordinator, your job is to utilize your players' strengths and mask their weaknesses. Even Coach Williams hung our secondary out to dry far to often. If we were to rate each defender from last season's team to decide if they deserves their current contract then no one would be getting paid. Maybe Jordan and Lofton....maybe

come on that is his super bowl contract. we all were a bit giddy back then,

plus the saints unlike 99% of the teams in the nfl are loyal to a fault with their players.

we will see soon enough his future. contract redo in the final year that is extended and made cap friendly would not surprise me at all

It wouldn't surprise me at all either. He was given that contract based on his role in GW's defense. That in the box safety is featured in Gregg Wiliamms' defense.

Now that Gregg was fired the following year his position is no longer featured, so of course he's currently over-paid. If we still had Gregg here he would not be overpaid.

Player are often overpaid in the last year of their contracts. Currently Harper is the 6th highest paid safety in the league. Obviously thats too high based on his current role.

Its no different than an O-lineman who excells at run blocking, but mediocre at pass blocking going from a power run team to a wide open pass offense that throws 70% of the time. Good player, wrong system.

This build up of lactic acid basically shuts down the muscles. It wouldn't have mattered if it was Usain Bolt in there instead of Harper, Bradford, or any other player that has had only minimal exertion, would have run him down, as well.

Translation for dummies: He ran out of gas.

He was pulling full vacuum on that oxygen mask for at least 10 minutes after that play. I thought it was funny that the players placed a couple 5-gallon gas cans at his locker after the game.

My theory is that Harper is cut this year after camp evaluations of the players brought in, and if the FO sees enough to know we already have his replacement.

We cut him and swallow all of the dead money this year, with out replacing, which gives us carry over cap for next year.

That's interesting, I wasn't aware the celery cap worked like that. So any dead money from a player who is not on the roster counts as cap carry-over to the next year? Does that mean we have any extra this year from somebody who we may have still been paying last year?

+1. I could see us doing just that.

Close but change celery cap to "unused cap" and your correct. Unused cap is carried over. If we start and finish this season with 4M in unused cap space it is +4M to next years cap.

The dead money is mostly already spent through bonus. And since his dead money this year is very close to his celery, its a wash.
