Former LSU kicker Josh Jasper gets tryout with Saints

This should get Hartley's attention!

*********************************************************

Former LSU placekicker Josh Jasper will try out with the New Orleans Saints next week at a four-day rookie mini-camp beginning May 9. Jasper is the most accurate placekicker in LSU history with an 83.9 success rate.

"I'm excited about trying out with them; I'm happier to be here than somewhere else," said Jasper, who made a school-record 28 of 34 field goals and led the Tigers with 120 points as a senior in 2010. "I've been training non-stop and keeping in shape waiting for this opportunity.

"I'm pretty sure they are bringing in a couple of other kickers. But I don't know who they are."

The Saints aren't in dire need of help at kicker. Garrett Harley is the Saints kicker and is under contract for the next three seasons. He is scheduled to make $734,000 and has a salary cap figure for this season is $1.2 million.

The Saints brought two kickers to training camp last season, Hartley and John Kasay, who replaced an injured Hartley the season before. Hartley won the job last year and made 18 of 22 field goal attempts.

Jasper went to training camp with Tampa Bay in 2011 before being released and also tried out with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League.

In addition to a school record, Jasper's 83.9 career percentage is second in SEC history. He made 47 of 56 career attempts, which includes five of seven from beyond 50 yards. His longest field goal was 53 yards.
Jasper also holds the school record for most field goals in a game when he made five against Mississippi State in 2010.

Jasper doubled as the Tigers short-range punter with great success. He averaged 39.8 yards per kick and 25 of his 41 career kicks were downed inside the opponents' 20-yard line.

However, why isn't he already with a team?

We need poise...

What do they mean kicker isn't a dire need? Hartley is garbage.

If he can't make it as a kicker in Canada my hopes aren't too high. Still Hartley needs a fire under his ass. Hell I wish he would just go away, there is just nobody else out there.

Supply and demand. The supply is much more than the demand and we all know some kickers are "streaky". Jasper 28 - 34 , Hartley 18 - 22.

Hartley is the poster boy for "I hope he makes this kick"

As a fan base we got to witness two of the all time best. Eddie Murray and Morten Andersen. Doug Brien and Carney weren't bad either.

I think not. But there you go. All very well telling the positives of five of seven from beyond 50 yards, But whar were the curcumstances of the missed 7 from 49 below 50 yards?

Whatever. Bring the competition in and lets see if Hartley can cope.

2012 NFL most accurate kicker 94%
2011 .... 93%

But NFL kickers for the most part have 1/2 a season indoors and on turf...

Other than indoors, and field type kicking in college is the same as the NFL.. A foot, a ball, a holder and uprights.

Garrett Hartley

2012 -81%
2011 - injured
2010 - 80%
2009 - 81%

Hartley is a kicker that has only managed to play 16 game 1 season in his career.

Man, I wish we could have gotten the kicker from Tulane. I was really hoping we could land him in UDFA.

He stayed in school. He's a senior this year (2013-2014)

Since his injury? He was benched during the 2010 season and that was way before his injury. Plus, he botched a chip shot very badly against Tampa Bay in week 16 during the 2009 Super Bowl run, which could have potentially cost us the #1 seed that year. He's also been terrible after the injury and I have no idea why we started him over John Kasay, who was terrific during our 2011 season.
