Saints' Mt. Rushmore

If you haven't seen it yet PFT is doing this thing where they create a "Mount Rushmore" for each of the NFL teams. That's four people that represent the team's history. From what I can tell not limited to players, it could be a coach, GM , etc. They've asked for Cowboys and Redskins so far.

Wondered if we could get anything close to a consensus. My four would probably be:

Drew Brees
Sean Payton
Deuce McAllister
Rickey Jackson

It's a tough exercise. I strongly feel you can't possibly leave off either Payton or Brees. One of the Dome Patrol pretty much has to be represented. The final spot for me came down to Deuce, Joe Horn or Morten Andersen. You could make a case for a few more too.

Sam Mills
Archie Manning
Willie Roaf
Jim Mora
Jim Finks

No doubt I've left a couple off that were before my time.

Re: Saints' Mt. Rushmore

I think you almost have to add Benson to the mix, since he didn't move the team away from NOLA and has been pouring money into the team quite generously, especially compared to the past.

The present time Mt. Rushmore would have to be Brees, Payton, Loomis and Benson, but that wouldn't really represent the history of the franchise.

It would be a tough decision any way you twist it.

Re: Saints' Mt. Rushmore

Tom Benson wants to win and has put his money were his mouth is time and time again. he is in

Archie Manning - Symbol of the price paid by fans and players alike

Drew Brees - Superbowl QB like archie is a great team spokes person

Sean Payton - Superbowl Winner that actually built the team that one it all

Why do people keep giving way more credit than he deserves?
Jim Mora - sorry failed
Jim Finks - sorry failed

Sentamental favorites but no
Deuce McAllister
Rickey Jackson
Sam Mills

Re: Saints' Mt. Rushmore

Benson is NOT the Saint you think he is remembering Benson threatened to move the team to San Antonio; Paul Tagliabue stepped in brokered a new deal; taxpayers are who deserve the credit as they paid the bill...

This thread was done a few months ago, but it's always a good conversation piece...

If you've got players only > Manning, Brees, Jackson, Andersen...

I'd add Jim Finks for assembling the talent and assembling the organization that FINALLY brought respectability to the team; even Benson, who pushed for Finks' commissioner candidacy acknowledged as much...

And, of course Sean Payton, who led the team to a Superbowl Championship...

Considering all things, I'd have Manning, Finks, Payton & Brees...

Roaf, Jackson, Brees and Colston.

Re: Saints' Mt. Rushmore

Yes, Benson threatened to move the Saints, but the key here is: he didn't no matter what the circumstances were behind the decision. It could've just been a businessman using his assets to get himself a better deal.

You have to remember that Benson originally bought the Saints in '85 when it was strongly rumored that the other parties interested in buying the Saints were planning on moving the franchise to Jacksonville.

If you put Jackson then Swilling, Johnson & Mills would have to be the other 3, but I'd say Archie, Brees, Payton & Benson.

I would throw in Finks OR Mora but one of the deserves the credit for finally bringing the franchise some winning seasons

Manning

And then either SP OR Drew

Name your Saints Mt. Rushmore nominees | ProFootballTalk
The ongoing effort to secure nominees for each team’s four-person Mt. Rushmore continues.

The NFC East is complete, and we’re now moving on to the NFC South.

We’ll start with the Saints, since that’s the only team from this quartet to win a Super Bowl in the last decade. List below some names for us to consider.

We’ll eventually fashion a list of eight finalists, where you can vote on four of them.

Re: Saints' Mt. Rushmore

Roaf, Jackson, Manning, Payton, Brees ... it pays homage to Saints history, the HOF selectees, the SuperBowl era Saints ... little bit of defense, a little bit of offensive line & best coach in there for good measure also, :).

Not enough credit goes to Governor Edwards who brokered that deal, put state/public funds, tax concessions, etc forward to guarantee the sale value provided Benson agreed not to move the team...

After Katrina, Paul Tagliabue, who Benson had been an adversary of Tagliabue since Finks' candidacy to challenge for the Commissioner's job, put money forward to assist in reconstruction of the market and indirectly instructed Benson in Public Forums that the NFL wasn't going to condone the Saints moving in the region's hour of need...

The saavy businessman he is - no dispute there...

But to threaten to relocate the team, taking advantage of the Post-Katrina environment was, at the very least, bad form...

But to put him among the "honored" of the franchise is disingenuous...

Re: Saints' Mt. Rushmore

Just a thought, should we segment the Rushmore into two sections, one on the field and one off? maybe have the players beneath and the non-players in a rock-encased suite looking down on them?

I can't get behind putting a kicker on that version of Rushmore. Even if it is Morten Anderson.

For me, it's Archie, Drew, Dulymus, and R. Jackson.
