Saints Add at Least Two Players After Rookie Minicamp

Saints add at least two players after rookie minicamp

Quote:

With rookie minicamp finishing up Sunday monring, the New Orleans Saints have apparently signed at least two players who attended this weekend's camp on a tryout basis:

- Cornerback Korey Lindsey, Southern Illinois (via Lindsey's agent on Twitter)

- Wide receiver Brent Leonard, Louisiana-Monroe (via the Monroe News-Star)

The Saints went into rookie minicamp with 87 players on their roster, according to their website. So the Saints had three roster spots they could fill.

Overview

Every season NFL teams scour the Football Championship Subdivision for prospects, especially at cornerback and receiver, where a lot of success stories have occurred. One of the top cornerbacks from the FCS that teams will covet is Lindsey, a two-time All-American.

Lindsey's lack of size and elite speed allowed this Baton Rouge-area star to fall through the cracks, but he stood out as a true freshman reserve playing all 14 games for the Salukis (19 tackles, interceptions). He earned the first of three straight first-team All-Missouri Valley team selections in 2008 by making six interceptions and breaking up five other passes. In 2009, he got on the radar of scouts with his first All-American season with six more picks along with four pass break-ups and 63 tackles, 2.5 for loss.

The Buck Buchanan Award finalist (FCS Heisman) did not see much action to his side in 2010 but still managed 41 tackles, one interception and seven pass break-ups. He also returns punts (24-124 in 2009, 10-56 in 2010), which could be a nice bonus to the team looking to pick up this slight-but-tough corner in the mid-rounds as a potential starter in a zone system.

Analysis

Positives:
Owns quick feet to mirror routes. Plays off the line, stays balanced and low as he retreats to quickly come forward. Doesn't get tested often, but flashes closing speed to throws in front of him. Handles double moves with nice recovery speed. Very good tackler after the catch. Generally effective cut tackler, both to attack runs and quick screens to his side of the field, as well as down the field to stop big plays from becoming touchdowns. Contains runs to his side and crashes inside when uncovered. Maintains distance from receiver blocks with long arms and tenacity. Good hands for the interception, can high-point the ball with excellent vertical. Some quickness and elusiveness on punt returns, generally makes good decisions. Durable player, played in all 50 possible career games.

Negatives:
Slight lower body build. Needs to be more aware of underneath throws when in zone. Takes an extra step in transition and gives too much cushion, allowing completions. Sometimes misses on his cut tackles when he was in position to wrap up. May get overpowered by large receivers downfield and on running plays. Does not have elite speed or vision as a returner. Must prove he can make the transition from the FCS level.

Brent Leonard, Louisiana-Monroe, WR, 6-1/196

Former Louisiana-Monroe wide receiver Brent Leonard has decided to accept a tryout with the New Orleans Saints next weekend, rather than trying out with the Dallas Cowboys as he initially planned.

ULM officials announced the change Friday for Leonard, who was the Warhawks' leading receiver last season with 104 catches for 1,118 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Leonard is due in New Orleans on Thursday to meet with coaches in advance of Saints rookie camp practices, which run May 10-12.

I personally like Rod Sweeting from GT as a breakout player (maybe more than a TC beast). Not that I am pulling against Korey Lindsey.

We could always use help at CB.

Robinson is quck, shifty, has good vision, and is a natural pass catcher. It's amazing how the staff keeps finding these guys. The combine is the most overrated thing in sports.

Even more so than the pro bowl or the Canton Hall of Fame game?

Khiry Robinson is not fast (he gets caught from behind quite a bit) but he does hit the hole really quick. He's got good size (6'1" and 220 lbs) and is good catching out of the backfield (as you already said). I am a bit troubled with his 40 time (4.71). That's slow for a skilled position player.
