I agree. I think Brown is our best option to start, but likely won't last a full season.

If its early, I think Jones or Smith steps in, but if its mid-season or later I think Armstead may be ready.

The fact that there is even talk, even if it only in the media of a late round rookie starting at tackle scares me. A lot.

Let's not count Smith out so quickly. He was a 1st rounder for a reason.......I know he's been a bust but he's here and will get as much of a chance as either one of those two to start. I didn't know anything about him before he came here but he has potential and this might be the place for him........we do wonders with retreads. I'm pulling for the big guy. Hell, I'm pulling for all of them.
Now, let's address the RT!

He was a 2nd rounder!

I just dont understand why it matters so much how high a tackle can jump or how fast he can run. I just want someone who can pass block. It wouldnt hurt to be able to run block either.

Playing guard however is a much different animal. At guard you have a fist fight in a phone booth, very limited space you need to take care of and guys on both sides which helps a lot. At tackle and especially to the left it is wide open spaces and a track meet in all that space.

Throw Armstead in there from day one if he is atleast 90% as good as Brown.

Brown, Smith, and Armstead - I do think there will be a good starter among them at LT, but I'm rooting for Brown after all of the adversity he has faced during his time with the Saints.

Things change every season. We actually have 2 tackle spots up for grabs. While I like Strief, and understand that he was playing injured most of last season, Brown looked really good in Strief's spot until he once again got injured. He does a better job with the speed rushers and anchors pretty well against the bull rush too. In the event Armstead wins the starting LT spot that doesn't mean that Brown can't win the RT spot if he can beat out a healthy Strief. Any way you look at it, the competition is going to make this O-Line better next year. Our offense is already lethal, could you imagine how sick it would be if we finally had a complete offensive line to protect Drew and give him even 2 more seconds in the pocket?

How high they can jump I would think would transcend to their ability to block or dive block on an outside run or screen so I think that's important. Their speed is used for the same reasons as well as trapping and pulling to open holes in the run game so I just think those measurable s are indeed important to the position of OT.
