Sean Payton says Kicker Jose Maltos has "got a live leg and his get off times are good"

1 Attachment(s)
From NOLA.com - "The 5-foot-9, 201-pound Maltos hails from the University of Nuevo Leon in Mexico, where he kicked field goals and punted. He's a 21-year-old undrafted rookie competing with veteran Garrett Hartley for the kicking job."

"He's got a live leg and his get off times are good," said New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton....

from the tapes on him earlier posted he seems to get great height on the ball by the time it get to the line also even from 40 yds out. still a shame we are looking at another kicker because of a hip injury

Re: Sean Payton says Kicker Jose Maltos has "got a live leg and his get off times are good"

I hope he turns out to be the real deal. I thank Garrett Hartley for helping us win a Super Bowl but the following year, his horrible miss against Atlanta kept us from the number one seed. And he has blown several makeable field goals like the one against KC last year, which allowed them to come back and beat us.

Jo-ooosaaai can you seeeeeee......

Go Jose Maltos!

Hartley has a cap of $2,671,200. His dead money is $1,515,600 = a saving of $1,155,600. He has 3 year left on his contract and his signing bonus is $505,000 a year.

I'm w/ ClintSaints. I'll admit I have been down on head case Hartley for years now. I know I know he kicked us into the Superbowl in '09, but before and after he has been nothing but INCONSISTENT at best. Hope this guy kicks his way into the startin role...

I think Sean Payton is going to right any wrongs from previous season, probably after having a season off and contemplation.

That means Fartley is on the bubble. Let the best man win. If the kid can kick, let him kick. We shall see soon enough.

It is one thing to stand on the sidelines with your sphincter clenched watching Hartley kick ..... It's another thing to see the agony on your interim head coaches face while Hartley kicks.

A third persons POV can change ones own view on a matter.

No offense Hartley. Thanks for the memories, the hits, the misses, that feeling in the pit of my stomach every time we need a game winner, but I'm really pulling for this kid. Not like Hartley keeps pulling his kicks though.

I just want a kicker who is automatic. Fartley did OK last season, but that's not good enough. He needs to be clutch, always. Sorry to purists who remember the clutch kick in 2010 from Hartley that booted us into the Superbowl - that was 2009, this is 2013.

I felt 100 times more confident with John Kasay as our kicker and although he is now retired, I believe he could have played even another season this year (and at more than half the price tag).

I completely agree with this. There were many high-pressure kicks that John Kasay delivered for us and actually I think we might have even had a winning season last year if we had had Kasay. Kasay would not have missed against Kansas City and we would have won that game, and maybe gotten on a roll. I still can't comprehend why we dropped Kasay and kept the fat punk kicker.

I agree to a point. From 53 + yards
I don't expect clutch. Hartley missing
Kicks shorter than extra point range is what did him in in my book. Extra Point and shorter indoors should be 100%.

We are a dome team and Hartley has a better kicking % outside on grass 8-/

His cap figure is far too high for what is expected of him and what he delivers.
We could save 1ml to 1.5ml on the cap with another kicker that could so the same job.Wether its this year or next something needs done.
You can't spend the money we do on a place kicker and punter while paying big money on the O-Line and QB

Re: Sean Payton says Kicker Jose Maltos has "got a live leg and his get off times are good"

Maltos is little more than a camp body. He has a good leg and he deserves a look just like all the rest of the UDFA's. But, I personally don't see him having a real shot at the position. I actually think Hartley will have an All-Pro season this year.

At this point Moorestead was challenging Hartley. Time for new blood.

You might not always remember his name -except Dempsy's, but an excellent kicker can make a good team great.

Hartely, seriously doubt he's going anywhere. These kickers aren't seasoned vets. I believe it's more of a CYA thing in case of injury.

Supertek 05-28-2013 08:59 AM

Re: Sean Payton says Kicker Jose Maltos has "got a live leg and his get off times are good"

Think it maybe CYA also. What a move for a guy from Mexico. This will be real pressure. That being said sometime a determined man just needs a chance. I slso have A hole problems from Hartley and his misses can't come at more critical times. He does not have the composure or concentration to be one of the best. I hope not to have to watch him again. Wish him the best just somewhere else.

Not trying to carry GH's water here, but he's currently the most accurate K in Saints history.

Garrett Hartley 60-71 (84.5%) 135/136 on PATs
John Kasay 30-36 (83.3%) 65/65 on PATs
John Carney 168-203 (82.8%) 264/268 on PATs
Doug Brien 123-149 (82.6%) 144/145 on PATs
Morten Anderson 302/389 (77.6%) 412/418 on PATs

I agree I get a little uneasy seeing GH trot out on the field with the game on the line, but I have always felt that way about kickers in general.

Jose will provide some competition for Hartley, and that is probably a good thing, plus he mighe be a good plan B if Hartley ends up hurt again.

When a player at any position that you carry 1 on the roster at has only played a full season 1 year out of 5, its time to get another. I dont care if he is 100% on FGs, if he can only play 8 games in a season your fkd the other 8 games. We have had to carry an extra kicker or a kicker other than Hartley all but one of his seasons. Just going off of Hartleys accuracy stat is comparable to giving a BU QB the title of most accurate when he only throws 15 passes a season.

If you take the season he was 100% which needs to be asterisked because he was on medication that he was later suspended for he is 81.2% which knocked him out of the top 4 kickers the Saints have had.
