Saints' Harper, Jenkins begin mentoring Vaccaro

METAIRIE, La. (AP)

A necessary but potentially awkward period has begun for Roman Harper and Malcolm Jenkins.

The defensive leaders and starting safeties find themselves tutoring a first-round draft choice who could very well take one of their jobs before long.

They knew this time was coming since New Orleans last month selected Texas safety Kenny Vaccaro 15th overall and coach Sean Payton said the Saints expect Vaccaro to contribute right away.

Harper, entering his eighth season, says mentors once helped him and now he needs to do the same.

Jenkins is in the fifth and last season of his contract. He says his focus is on winning now and that the addition of Vaccaro should help.

Vaccaro says he's felt fortunate to join a team with accomplished veterans willing to help him.

As long as Harper doesn't teach him how to cover.

Jenkins needs to first learn how to play FS to mentor anyone. That's like the blind leading the blind and I hope V never falls to Jenkins pathetic level of play, it would be another wasted 1st round pick.

Nuh uh! Didn't you know those two were the reason we were ranked 32nd in all categories last year?

Well they are pretty much forced to. You want to win and then you need your teammates to be as good as possible.

You combine Harper and Jenkins into one and there's gonna be places on the field no one in their right mind is gonna want to be.

I actually thought a lot of Sharper's success would trickle down to M Jenkins and 'carry the torch' so to speak.

Like wise, I thought it would too lol malcolm actually had a decent year in 2010 taking over for sharper, since then not so much
In a similar scheme lets hope he can showcase his ability

Same goes for Robinson. He and Jenkins looked like they were developing quite nicely then along came Spags and that DB coach we fired.

Maybe losing Dennis Allen hurt more than we thought?

We now have a pretty decent secondary coach in Wesley McGriff...

Porter, Greer, Sharper, Harper and Jenkins all had solid years with dennis allen as the DB coach so its very likely

Wasn't Jenkins playing corner? And if I'm not wrong Sharper wasn't playing FS. Jenkins aint' that good period. Sharper had field vision, Jenkins don't.

I meant in 2009 and 2010

Porter, greer, sharper and harper had their best year in 2009

Jenkins had a solid 2010 season at FS

I keep hearing that all over the place. I have high hopes for a drastic improvement in our secondary.

That's the one thing that really bugs me about the huge paychecks these guys get. Once they retire, they don't have to work and if they do they just want to sit down and talk about ****. We lose great football knowledge every year because so many of these major talents don't come back into the coaching ranks once their playing days are over.
