New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis did a nice job of guiding the Saints through a tough salary-cap situation this offseason. But Loomis is going to have to do the same thing all over again next year.

...the Saints have a league-high $143.4 million committed toward a 2014 cap that’s expected to be slightly more than $120 million...

The Carolina Panthers are fourth at $128.2 million. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have $118.5 million committed toward next year’s cap...

The Atlanta Falcons are in the best cap shape...But that’s only a temporary (as they're) likely to sign quarterback Matt Ryan to a contract extension...

We're gonna need those draft picks...

Unless we can get someone to lineup in a trade for Will Smith, Roman Harper...

You know, if we keep bringing in talent through the draft we could be on to something here.

I suspect we're gonna see a lot of rookies make the team over the next 2 years.

Oh, and we still have to sign Jimmy Graham.

Older guys who doesn't produce up to par wit their pay will have to restructure/renegotiate or get cut. Just look at Vilma and Smith. Hopefully we can draft well too and fill the roster that way.

How does Brees cap hit look? Wasn't his contract quite front-loaded?

In 2014 add another $20ml to cap for Evans and Grubbs.

Trade them all and have picks for the next 10 years. Well maybe not?.

We still have yet to get to camp much less know what the 2013 team will officially look like. There is also the issue of the 2014 cap not being any where near being set until after the 2013 season,

Its a little premature to look at 2014, Yastinkass must be running out of negative things to say about the Saints. He is an idiot and epically fails to either understand cap or just does not think some of us do.

Here is how the present useless cap #s actually work out for 2014

2013 Adjusted Cap 125.1
Present roll over is not used 5.5M
Dead money that falls off 1.1M

So I see our 2014 cap situation as $118.5M Spotrac.com has us at $122.5 which includes Brees and everyone elses 2014 contract cap numbers.

Where do you get that? Their caps only go up 10M combined.

Exactly:

Grubs cap hit from 2013 to 2014 goes up from 4.3m to 9.1 = 4.8M

Evans cap hit from 2013 to 2014 goes up from 6.7m to 11 = 4.3M

Total increase on both players 9.1M

Where are you looking to see 20m on both?

I was talking about the combined cap numbers not the increase.
Poorly worded on my part.

Hell's Bells! Has the cap situation for this year been totally sorted out?

thebdj 06-03-2013 03:21 PM

Re: Saints lead NFL in 2014 cap commitment

I'm fairly confident Loomis will sort this out. Some key things for me:

1) Players are always willing to 'help out' and restructure because it usually involves them getting more guaranteed money which is exactly what they are after

2) Nobody has put up any figures for Cap Savings, i.e. all of the money committed this season that will not be present next season unless we re-sign players. So Vilma for example costs $3.8 million on the cap this year but then he is an UFA next season. That's an instant massive cap saving

3) We are always going to have, and rightfully so, a massive cap commitment to Drew Brees. There is every chance he will restructure as part of point 1 at some point, but eventually he will retire. Not trying to be a doomsayer, just saying that whilst we have a Hall of Famer under centre and giving us every chance of a lombardi, we do everything to keep moving cap commitments to the right until we get a huge chunk back.

Hahaha! I love it! Other than centre (center) and football (soccer) what other sporting terms do you Brits misspell?

Loomis is in charge, who cares what the Saints cap number for next year will be, when the deadline hits he will get them under the cap like he does year in and year out
