Victor Butler has torn his ACL

1 Attachment(s)
A source tells the Times-Picayune that Saints OLB Victor Butler tore his ACL during Tuesday's practice.

After showing significant potential as a pass-rusher in a part-time role with the Cowboys over the last four seasons, Butler went shopping for playing time in free agency. He landed a two-year, $3 million contract with the Saints and was expected to start at the SAM linebacker spot in Rob Ryan's 3-4 scheme. Now he's looking at a season on the injured reserve list, leaving Martez Wilson as the next man up. The injury happened during a collision with Mark Ingram during what was supposed to be a non-contact practice.

Didn't want to up this to the front page yesterday because people would start freaking out. Guess I have no choice now it's revealed to be serious.

Sucks.

Would have loved to have him this year, but this just makes me look forward to what Junior and Martez can do with more snaps. I'm saddened and excited at the same time.

Re: Victor Butler has tore his ACL

We have the worst luck with linebackers

Signed dan morgan in 2009 to pair with vilma - IR
Casillas tore up preseason and SP put him in shanles spot for the start - IR preseason week 4
Signed clint ingram from the jags in 2009 - IR

Was excited to see butler but guess martez and junior will be getting extra snaps now, god help us if someone gets injured in camp or preseason

Our linebacker depth chart is starting to sort itself out.

Opens the door for Thomas or Reddick to show what they've got. Sucks to lose Butler, but I'm looking at the silver lining.

Re: Victor Butler has tore his ACL

This is the one position where the Saints can most easily overcome a loss like this. From all accounts Will Smith is looking very good in the role of an OLB and Martez Wilson and Junior Gallette both have the ability to shine in this defense. The late pickup of Rufus Johnson in this year's draft may start paying dividends immediately. He has the potential to be a monster.

This is all a part of the game of football. VChill out and enjoy.

The hacks are already calling this a "huge blow" to our revamped D. (And you think B&G has a drama issue.) Have to ask, how big is this really?

dang I was ready to see Butler in this D... but hey big shot for Gallette and Wilson to step up

Florida Evans sums it up best

Re: Victor Butler has tore his ACL

I don't even see this as a big loss. The guy has potential but his production doesn't even match what Galette or Wilson have done on the pass rush.

There is Galette, Wilson, Will Smith, three rookies and I'm sure even a couple more players who can step into that role. IMO the pass rushing stars on this D were going to have to be Galette and Wilson anyway.

4-6 month recovery time, he will be back and ready to go after the BYE week.

Until then we have plenty of depth.

I thought recovery time was more like 6-9 months, which would pretty much take him out for the season. Not sure though.

IMO this is definitely a loss, but not a "devastating" blow like some are saying.

It varies from opinion to opinion, depends on severity of damage. I found an article from the University of Arizona that stated 4-6 months which not only makes me feel better but I recon when the NFL pours money into a knee it probably heals faster than when the average persons insurance does. ;)

Actually i am going to revise it to a few weeks :-)

"If you do have an ACL injury, then you’ll be forced off your current training schedule. Depending on the nature of the ACL injury, and the type of treatment you need to undergo, your ACL injury recovery time may range anywhere from a few weeks to up to a year"

ACL Injury Recovery Times and Expectations

As far as I know or can read we do not know if it was a partially torn or complete torn?

Thomas, Reddick, Ruffus and Martin................not to mention Jr and Martez. We'll survive and be just fine. Take a deep breath and think about it. We have a lot of potential in our young players. We'll be alright. No fear.

TheOak, did you take that picture? I was sitting in almost the exact same spot at that game and remember her well :)

Re: Victor Butler has tore his ACL

I think an ACL injury that only takes a few weeks would be like a strain or something that didn't need surgery. From what I have read this is a tear (not sure if partial or complete) and will need surgery, so I expect it would be in the months category, I guess it just depends on how many months if he will get any playing time this season or not.

Nope, wasn't there (thank the lord, my wife would have beat me around the head and neck area for a while). I used it in 2009.

I am of the mind that there is a slim chance having had her as my avatar in 2009 brought us a championship. So.... Lets do it again!

If you or I had this we would be going to rehab down the road for 6 months, with the hyperbaric chambers etc NFl players recover faster.

Here is a time frame for a major tear. RG III had surgery on Jan 9th to repair both his LCL and ACL he was back at practice by May 23rd.. 4 months and 3 weeks later. Mind you this was the second time he has torn his ACL, the way I understand it every time you tear it, it is worse.
"He took snaps under center, made throws to his receivers and even briskly jogged between drills while sporting a bulky knee brace. "

Re: Victor Butler has tore his ACL

RGIII's ultra motivated and practically an athlete in a class of his own. Not everyone is convinced that his quick return is the best thing for him to do. There's a whole bunch we don't know about Butler's injury yet. It'd be great to see him this season, but I think we'll still be okay if we don't.

Its not muscular, so it has little to do with being an athlete or strength or conditioning. It is more about personal healing speed and providing the right environment for a speedy recovery.

Adrien Peterson - ACL and MCL I am trying to find his surgery to practice time period.

That's right, I remember AP coming back way ahead of schedule too. How badly does Butler want it? I'm waiting for jeanpierre's next depth chart now.

I believe the normal time period for recovery is 6 months, I think AP was running after 3 months so his recovery time was very good

Re: Victor Butler has torn his ACL

Adrian Peterson is an extreme example. I wouldn't go counting on that kind of healing time for Butler. I do think we could see him on PUP and coming back around week 10. That would be almost 6 months from the injury.
