Can Aaron Brooks carry the New Orleans Saints' offensive load while running back Deuce McAllister is out with an ankle injury?

Yes.

He demonstrated as much after McAllister suffered the injury in Week 2 against San Francisco. Brooks ended up completing 25 of 34 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns without throwing an interception.

I realize Brooks has a reputation for being erratic, and, in fact, looked pretty shaky in the season opener against Seattle. But he seems to feel more comfortable with a group of talented pass-catchers that figures to have a good deal of success against the St. Louis Rams. Joe Horn is a constant game-breaking presence at one receiver spot and is even more effective now that Donte' Stallworth is finally living up to his big-play potential at the other receiver position.

Jerome Pathon and tight end Boo Williams also are effective targets, as is McAllister's replacement, Aaron Stecker, who might not be as explosive as the starter but does catch the ball well (as he demonstrated with six receptions against the 49ers).

Brooks has a chance to thrive, considering the Rams' poor depth at cornerback and their defensive line's inability to consistently produce the pass rush needed to successfully pull off playing a Cover Two scheme that puts greater pressure on the cornerbacks.

Vic could be right. If AB plays as well as he is able to, then this could happen. If Ab plays as badly as he is capable of, stick a fork in us. The fun part is that you won\'t know which AB is on the field until the 4th quarter.

More than anything for this theory to be right, we have to score on virtually every possession. If we don\'t put a lot of points up, we\'re in trouble. I have no confidence in our defensive line to stop or slow down Faulk. I think we can get some sacks on Bulger, but Faulk can tear us up on the ground or catching screens. I\'d feel a lot better about Vic\'s take is Faulk wasn\'t so healthy and running so well at this point in the season.

I hope he\'s right, too. Brooks has looked to be the best offensive player on the field along with Joe Horn the first two games of the season, even against the Seahawks. Let\'s just hope that week 1 performance by the receivers was only early season jitters. They seemed to remember how to catch the ball in week 2 against the Niners. If they continue their progression, Brooks should be on fire today against the Rams. It will be interesting to see how this game pans out.
