Saints place 4 on PUP

Ian Rapoport ‏@RapSheet

The #Saints have placed LB Victor Butler, S Roman Harper, and CB Patrick Robinson on PUP list, I'm told.

New Orleans Saints defenders Victor Butler, Roman Harper, Patrick Robinson will start training camp on PUP list, report says | NOLA.com

New Orleans Saints linebacker Victor Butler, safety Roman Harper and cornerback Patrick Robinson are slated to begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list, according to the NFL Network.

Butler sustained a torn ACL during the last week of organized team activities in mid-June and had surgery the following week to repair the tear. So Butler still remains in danger of missing the whole season, but landing on injured reserve with a designation for a return could still be a possibility.

Harper practiced sporadically during the on-field offseason workouts with an unspecified injury. Robinson sustained a knee injury during minicamp in early June.

Butler will be a loss imo.
If nothing else he would have allowed s better rotation. Luckily Safety has a fsir bit of depth.

Butler will hurt... but we just might get lucky... either he gets back for the playoffs, or our other LBers develop nicely, or both.

Re: Saints place three on PUP?

According to PUP rules, either player can come back to practice at any point prior to the season, but I'm not too optimistic about that happening, particularly in the case of Robinson. P-Rob is dealing with a knee injury sustained during minicamp this off-season. Meanwhile, Roman Harper's reason for landing on the PUP list is unspecified, just the way we like it.

The biggest winners of Roman Harper and Patrick Robinson on PUP are Vaccaro and Corey White. Tons of 1st team reps await them.

— Saints Nation Blog (@SaintsNationBlg) July 24, 2013
Which means opportunity is knocking for Kenny Vaccaro, Jabari Greer and Corey White. With two first team level talents now completely missing training camp reps, those spots are wide open and for the taking.

Vaccaro has possibly the most to gain from Harper's absence. All the Roman Harper haters out there just creamed their pants. Yesterday was like their Christmas. As a first round draft pick, Vaccaro was already expected to contribute early. Now he's practically got no choice. We'll get to see what he's made of sooner rather than later. Which is good because I'm a very impatient man. Just ask my proctologist. Considering Vaccaro's pedigree, I'd expect him to embrace this situation and not flounder in confusion.

With Robinson out, it means Jabari Greer can breath a sigh of relief. A little bit of the heat is off him for the time being. Which should leave him more time to purse all that artsy crap he's into. If Greer plays well, he could really solidify himself as the No. 2 cornerback behind Keenan Lewis. Of course the same could be said for Corey White. He's the potential underdog story here. But at the very least, White probably steps into the starting nickel spot, which is a promotion.

Saints training camp is still a few days away but things are picking up steam, football-type events are starting to happen and it's making me tingly in my pants! Are you getting excited!?!?!?

This team needs to find a way to stop hurting each other. I know competition is tough and you have to show what you can do. But we can't really afford to lose what little we have defensively. P-Rob is a bust to me. Another 1st round waste. We have no luck with drafting defensive players highly. Just hope Kenny V is not the same. It's going to be real hard for him to come right in with no NFL experience and be on top of this game. I wanted an experienced top Strong safety through free agency but it did not happen.

Sean does this every year. No cause for concern. Akin to Greg Popovich protecting his lineup when it matters most.

Me too. Payton has done this before with players.

Was it an injury from last year they kept hidden? Was it during the off-season? Was it recent?

If PRob was hurt last year, it sure helps explain some of his struggles.

Ahh, I remember that now. At that time it was said to be minor.

Re: Saints place three on PUP?

Robinson's injury is supposedly minor. There was an excerpt posted in an article a while back mentioning it but it wasn't made a big deal given its severity. I'm sure they're just being cautious with him and Harper for that matter.

P-rob being injured should give corey white more of a role in the slot again, which frankly I'm happier about.
Corey white could become a big player for us if he plays anything like he did before he got injured

Butler is on the team but has not played ONE snap. How can he be "missed?" That's like saying I miss the one million dollars I almost didn't win!

Hey, guys I've got a great idea for the league! Let's have fewer practices in pads, more offseason workouts without pads, let's make it less like the actual games and the way players are trained to play, let's limit the practicing in pads so fewer people will get hurt! It not like players need pads to protect their knees, ACL's, groins and hips when they're out there just practicing, right? RIGHT?

Re: Saints place three on PUP?

Robinson is the only one that we need to get healthy and play. Abdul-Quddus and Bush played better than Jenkins and Harper IMO last year so having Vaccaro, Jenkins, Abdul-Quddus and Bush is a solid set of safeties and having Harper in there will add depth. It just looks like we will run 2 corners and 3 safeties instead of the other way around on passing packages.

Not a problem; Vacarro and Jenkins both played corner in college, and didn't White play both as well?

We appear to have fragile players on our team and that concerns me going into this season. If we don't win week 1, I'm predicting Car to win the division. Its going to be close between us, panthers, and falcons. And if we don't win week 1 we have to win week 5.

Every team deals with it; you just don't hear about it as much because you're more in tune with the Saints.

It could always be worse; just look at what the Patriots are going through. Or the Cowboys; I believe they've already lost two defensive starters to IR

Maybe Sean Payton is just playing it safe so that these guys can heal instead of aggravating an existing injury. Maybe their injuries aren't really that bad. Let's hope. In the mean time, I'm looking forward to Vaccaro getting as much experience as humanly possible (without getting hurt of course).

And it gives the younger guys more reps. Harper and P-Rob don't need the reps nearly as much.

Per Payton

Harper - Sports hernia, out a few more days
Robinson - Out till pre-season games start
Stills - Wrist, limited
Colston out 1 week - Foot

Re: Saints place three on PUP?

Wide receiver Marques Colston was added to the physically unable to perform list Thursday, which means the eight-year veteran won’t be on the field for the Saints’ first training camp practice Friday.

Saints coach Sean Payton said Colston has a foot injury but should return within a week. Rookie receiver Kenny Stills, a fifth-round draft pick, should be able to practice soon after being put on the PUP list with a wrist injury.

Earlier this week, the Saints put strong safety Roman Harper, linebacker Victor Butler and cornerback Patrick Robinson on the PUP list, which means they can’t practice until they pass a physical.

Butler tore his ACL in one of the team’s final offseason workouts, and Payton said Robinson had arthroscopic knee surgery this spring. Harper is recovering from sports hernia surgery.

Payton expects Harper to be ready, soon and he said they’ll monitor Robinson weekly although General Manager Mickey Loomis said it may be late in the preseason before he’s full go.

Is it my imagination that the less the teams practice, the more injuries occur?

What the hell is going on?

Saints WR Marques Colston to Start Training Camp on PUP List?

We knew going in to New Orleans Saints training camp that the team had a variety of injuries—safety Roman Harper is dealing with one, as is rookie wide receiver Kenny Stills and cornerback Patrick Robinson.

One name we didn’t expect to see pop up on the injury list is one of the Saints’ most important players—receiver Marques Colston.

Head coach Sean Payton revealed the news during the press conference to kick off Saints training camp (per NOLA.com):

#Saints Payton expanding on injuries: WR Colston has foot ‘we’re trying to be cautious with.’ CB Robinson had knee scoped this summer and ‘progress has been outstanding.’ S Harper (abdomen) will be limited, WR Stills (wrist) will be limited. But they should participate. … And LB Butler will obviously be sidelined with torn ACL.

Payton says Colston has a foot injury and could be on PUP miss a week. Robinson is week-by-week with a knee scope.

This is a bit concerning if you’re a Saints fan. Colston has quietly been one of the NFL’s best receivers for years. Saints fans known this—the rest, not so much.

It sounds as if the coaching staff is trying to take a caution approach, which makes it seem like it could be a nagging injury. With any luck it’s one that won’t be an issues throughout the season, but this isn’t a great start.

Colston can come off the PUP list at any time during camp. Keep a close eye on this one. We’ll have the latest.

Give the new guys reps. Colston doesn't need to risk anything.

No he doesn't, but he does need his reps as well.

Re: Saints WR Marques Colston to Start Training Camp on PUP List?

He needs his foot issue to be gone before he gets any reps. No need to risk dragging the healing out just so a veteran gets a few reps.
