Hear Me Out ... ( Roman Harper )

With all of the injuries crippling our already bridge on its last leg defense we haven't many answers before we step up to the Plate against the " already crowned NFC Champion Falcons " ( BS ) in less than 2 Weeks.

Which means even if we brought someone new in they'd have to catch all the wrinkles better yet folds of Rob Ryans complicated system just in time ( 2 weeks ) for him to throw the falcons for a few loops and for us not to shoot ourselves in the foot while doing so ...

Some suggest signing 49'ers cut players could be a viable option , but just because they're from San Francisco doesn't mean we inherit any of that vaunted defense of theirs. It may be a complete misfire. If Harbaugh can't find use in you , thats pretty darn bad considering what he did with Alex Smith.

So with the Will Smith being out indefinitely with his Knee Injury , here's my proposal ...

Roman Harper cannot cover ( Not News ) ... Point Blank Period. Watch the Texans tape ... When Vaccarro or another Saftey is in , no deep throws. When Roman's in , Bang 30 Yard Snag right off of the blocks. Not to Say Harper didn't have a good game , because when he hit people he looked alot like a Linebacker ...

HMMMM , Now there's an Idea !!!

Placing him at Will Smiths linebacker position would be a tremendous upgrade , because of his speed , physicality , instincts , and if we trusted Harper to cover teams best receivers why shouldn't we be able to trust him covering guys that Will Smith would otherwise be covering ? When he was playing under Greg Williams he led our Team in Sacks. The Guy Has Linebacker written all over him. I'd rather have a slightly undersized but physical nasty speedy Linebacker than what our previous choice was.

But Then Who Would be our Safeties ? I remember a post on this forum about the efficiency of Isa Abdul when he was targeted. In Fact I remember our season turned around when he and Bush got more reps. We had turnovers and even pitched a shutout ( Tampa Bay )

And then you add the Rookie Vaccarro !
Look people we Drafted Vaccarro to do just what he has done. Get Physical , Shut Other teams weapons down and get a bit bloody. The Kid has a Swagger to him that says , I got this , I think we should let him get it ! He's repeatedly stated he is not intimidated by the bright lights or covering the Likes of Julio Jones. And Judging by the position we're in it may come down to just that.

Harper is an aggressive weapon that we're trying to make a passive player. I personally think Harper would be an Asset at LB. His coverage skills for a Safety are questionable but for covering RB's and Flat routes ... Easy and He already knows the system.

Re: Hear Me Out ... ( Roman Harper )

I can appreciate the idea but Harper at LB wont work. As an OLB you need to be able to set the edge and turn running play back to the inside. OLBs that weigh 270 have problems against the run, there is no way in hell Harper could manage the run as an OLB. Harper is not a great pass rusher; when the guy got sacks it was due to him not being blocked on the designed blitz. Has anyone seen Harper shed an OT to make a sack on the QB?

Truth is we are hurting at OLB but we should stretch to make a player fit the scheme? If Wilson and Galette are ready to go 100% week 1 then we will do pretty well, but if they have nagging injuries our young bucks need to put their big boy pants on.

Re: Hear Me Out ... ( Roman Harper )

He's way too small to play LB in a 3-4 scheme... O-Linemen, TE's, hell even backs would block him out of his shoes.

The one thing Smith had going for him was his size and power made him hard to block. Just look at that run stop he had before he was injured, receiver/TE(can't remember) couldn't block him...

Fail, on numerous fronts too numerous to count, numerically that is.

I'm telling you from Stats , tape and what the record books said about our defense last year. 6'1 isn't exactly Darren Sprolesish ...

Hell he's taller than Lofton and the same exact Size as Vilma ! What are yall smoking ?!

Re: Hear Me Out ... ( Roman Harper )

Or bring Rufus is on run situations and let Harper do his work on 3rd

He's 200 lbs. when the typical 3-4 OLB runs 240 - 265ish. Blockers will eat him up... all his sacks come from when he is the extra man un-blocked

I'll let the " popular kids " win this one. Regardless , we need an answer

Re: Hear Me Out ... ( Roman Harper )

First off he is too light in the azz to stop the run
B. You only need 1/2 cup of sugar
III. only cut the yellow wire

Keep in mind; in the event of an actual emergency, all objects in mirror are closer than they appear.

With a little less than 2 weeks to go, we better get Roman on a cheeseburger diet soon to get his weight up. About 10 of these for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner... I think it's possible.

All with a diet coke of course.

Will Smith is out for the season. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Is that bacon battered or just fried like a cracklin?

I'd so tear that up.

LOL

I used to sign/draft strong safeties w/ 87+ speed, move them to LB and wreck teams :bng:

Re: Hear Me Out ... ( Roman Harper )

Just a thought, why not let our SS play SS and perhaps sign a LB to play LB?

That is battered (i believe from the appearance) deep fried bacon.... Ran across it at the Golden Corral by the house Sunday (my little girls get a kick out of the idea of a buffet) Didn't have the heart to attempt. Not with a Saints game coming up in a few hours..

Here, food porn.

I would move linebackers like Johnathan Casillas with good speed, but a bad overall to defensive end and do the same thing.

So it's moot we signed the OLB from SF.

I liked the idea - for obvious passing plays.

Any more of Harbaughs cut players worth anything will be long gone before they trickle down the wire to us. We would have to trade something. Like we just did.

Iirc veterans cut before the season starts don't go thru waivers anymore.
They become UDFA's right away. We may have kept zona or St. Louis from signing him. Not sure tho

Roman Harper is a safety and a good SS at that. #27 has got to go.............then we can get better.

Re: Hear Me Out ... ( Roman Harper )

I think Rob Ryan will use variations of the 46 defense, just like Gregg Williams used to do. In that formation Harper will line up in a linebackers spot. He did very well playing that role for GW.

Re: Hear Me Out ... ( Roman Harper )

Yeah, I was just about to say I think Harper can be kind of the hybrid linebacker/safety guy that comes in on nickel downs and covers that zone in between the 2nd and 3rd level. If anybody remembers Chris Oldham from way back in the day he was a similar player to Harper and was a pretty important role player for that 2000 team.

Re: Hear Me Out ... ( Roman Harper )

He's not even big enough for strong safety really. Whatever else you might want to say about him the man has been making a living for eight years now of going toe toe with some of the baddest boys on the planet. Even if Vacarro takes his starting job there's always a place for a guy like Harper. He's old school.

How is it possible that with all the DBs that have been through here in the last 10 years we have only found one who can catch a football? I know they're not WRs but they're pro football players! Out of the group we have now none of them can catch a football when it's thrown into their hands.

It's drving me crazy!

The Coaches like him enough to keep him around. It is called loyalty and knowledge. Some of you should try to learn about those qualities in a man.

That's the very thing that's going to change the success our D has been missing.
Actually making the pick when it hits your hands is HUGE!
Coming to a play late...and "ready" for the ball when it comes loose is HUGE!
I've seen guys giving up on a fair catcher and not ready for the muff.
Seemingly little things, but HUGE. We need 1 or 2 Johnny-on-the-spots.
One or two guys with the ability to slow things down, and play in the moment,
Harper included, can once again put us over the top.
Linebacker is a bit tooooooo much to ask.
